Gaia gps is very good. I use it on my phone. It works when there is no cell signal coverage, if you are tracking routes however it is very power hungry. I generally track roads when I go to a new area, once that it all done then I only use it when walking if it’s absolutely necessary.
To save on the battery life I plot points when needed rather than use the tracking function.
It is getting easier to use a phone and the apps available to limit the amount of gear needed when hunting/hiking etc. I always have a garmin gps in the car but seldom take it with nowadays as it is just another item to carry around and look after.
