QR Rings On A DG Rifle: Necessary or Hype?

Yep, if memory serves USPSA is actually 23 feet (7.6 yd).
I used to use 10" paper plates, but it is hard to get instant feedback from them when doing the 15, 10, 5 yards, 5 seconds course.
And clay pigeon are pretty small at 4.3" which is not a bad thing once you are proficient, but pretty difficult to start with...
All I can say is that a 6" steel plate (or even a 12" steel plate) swings pretty horizontal when hit by a DG round.
But let's play it safe and advise people to run the drill with milk jugs, coffee cans, or good old balloons. Blowing them up will give your double's barrels time to cool down before blowing them up (pun fully intended) :)

Optic and the mounts for them have come a long way in the time I've been shooting.
When I started shooting it wasn't unusual for a scope to loose zero with fixed rings.
Today I would put Talley, Warne and Alaska Arms QR rings up against any fixed rings for durability.
There is no truly good reason (IMO) not to be using a quality QR scope mount.

Having to rezero a scope at a lodge that got banged around in transit is a PITA.
Not olny for you, but the guide or PH as well.
Loss of hunting time and wasting ammo on such things seem silly for the price of QR rings.
Being able to remove the scope for travel prevents this.

For a serious dedicated DG rifle quality QD mounts are essential in my opinion.

Bearing in mind that a rifle stock designed for scope use may not be usable with the iron sights. Which will loose the faster instinctive shooting ability. Make sure you can see the iron sights properly and they are lined up correctly otherwise it will be a futile exercise.

I would prefer the stock made to fit for use with a ghost ring at the back and the scope mounted with QD mounts.

Actually I remove my scopes while cleaning my 375 just for convenience and to keep from getting solvents on the lenses. Always seems to return to zero.

My DG rifle has QD rings, but I find I actually shoot faster with the scope than the Irons, despite practicing a fair bit with both.

The scope is a long eye relief Meopta with a true 1x bottom end and a clean reticule, plus a roughly 4MOA illuminated dot.

Inside 30 yards I can use it as a red dot shooting both eyes open and as the stock fits fine with the low mounts, so it mounts smootly and the eyebox is massive.

The irons are the usual bead and broad v set up, zeroed at 50ish, so simply point and shoot, but it takes a split second longer to mount, acquire the bead, put it on the target and subconciously sort the sight picture with the v than to just cover the target with the red dot and shoot.

Of all the comments I've read so far this one is the most persuasive. Combine that with the fact I already have QR rings I've decided to keep mine. Thanks for all the comments and input.

I recently got a set of Talley QD rings/bases for a M70. the selection is limited since the rear hole spacing is .435". To complicate things the rings need to be 30mm. So I tried talley rings/bases. the basic set is the base and a ring that clamps onto the base with a star-drive screw. To make is a quick release the star-drive screw is removed an a screw that has an octagonal portion of the shaft is inserted. Mating with the octagonal shaft is a lever used to tighten/loosen the screw. Of the pieces that I received (two star-drive screws, two QD screws and the rings) the two star-drive screw and one QD screw fit fine. I was able to install according to the instructions, tightening to 25 in lbs. However the remaining screw had a defect in its threading. It would only screw into the base with considerable effort. there was no visible barb, but as the screw was turned into the base then removed, reinsertion was easier. To avoid the issue I removed the QD screws and replaced both with the star-drive screws. there was no discernable difference in turning the star-drive screw into the base that had the problem QD screw turned into it. so it appears that whatever changes were made by turning the screw into the base occurred with the screw. I contacted Brownell (where I purchased the bases/rings) and Talley via e-mail. I got a response from Brownells saying that they were busy over the holidays but wanted me to fill out a survey on how satisfied I was with their customer service (what customer service?). Now I get a response from Talley saying I can return everything that I received for possible refund/replacement but that it may not be covered because I "modified" it. Actually, if they would just send a QD screw that was properly made, I would be satisfied.

As it stands I have Talley star-drive removeable rings on the scope, pending obtaining some Leupold QD bases that I'll take to a machine shop to have a screw hole ground for .435". I know lots of people like the Talley, but so far my experience with them has been unsatisfactory.

I had one experience with an incorrect set of rings being sent from Talley. The initial order was placed with someone who obviously didn’t know much about the product (I could reblue or anodize the rings any finish I wanted according to the salesman).

I got on the phone with someone who knew what he was talking about and received the correct rings the next day with an RA# for the incorrect rings. Less than 24 hours to fix their mistake is pretty good.

I’ve bought a handful of Talley products over the years and have noticed that some of their guys know a lot about what they’re talking about and some don’t. I would hope they could see clear to sending you a screw.

Hope it works out.

I would be interested in it if you pass. Please send me the info on the gun shop if you do not buy it. I have the needed ammo and brass.
Thanks,
