What do you do when your taxidermist wont respond

And rest assured this has been and IS addressed Ted.
Sorry it has been the long. But I'm far from as perfect as my work is.
I do stumble and fall like anyone but stay back up , like here and address this !

Tedhorn— Has the communication improved? Pictures of mounts? Delivery scheduled or received?

No pictures and no responce to my last two PM's
I have requested an up to date invoice for what $$ that I owe and I will be driving up to his shop to pay him and bring home my capes and horns to have completed elsewhere.

I definitely avoid this type of situation for my taxidermy. Guess that’s why I pay extra for guaranteed 90 delivery. No need to call no need to worry. If he misses the date by even a week I get my work done less the additional cost. And it has happened he was late by a week or two and he honored the arrangement by taking off the fee.

Simple. I will do it myself , as l used to do for many years in the shikar field when guiding clients in far off places where it would be days before we reached back to the city and a professional taxidermist.

Allow me to teach you all some rudimentary taxidermy , in case it is of interest to anyone .
With a pair of scissors, a sharp carbon steel fine grained bladed knife, pliers, salt or alum with ash, one can dabble in some amateur skinning. To those who are interested from an academic perspective, this is how it is done : The first and foremost thing is to measure the animal, as quite often after it has been skinned and stretched, the resulting specimen is often larger than the original, and some shikarees actually prefer it this way . 1stly , with charcoal, spots on the animal must be marked out, after turning it on its back. Starting from the lower lip, all the way to the tail, the next cuts are from the inside of the fore and hind legs, through its pads. Now the skin can be taken off, although around the head, extreme care must be taken. It’s not for the squeamish and many a time I have had friends who vommitted, seeing such a sight .
Carnivora take a longer time to decompose but also give off an offensive odour and hence it is always better to have your nose and mouth covered with a handkerchief. The skin is cleaned to remove blood and then stretched out, with pegs if one has carried them, over a carpet of dried grass, and liberally mixed with ash. There should be extra support under the head and the ears must be turned inside out. It is then treated with an equal amount of salt and ash, to get the moisture out. This has to be repeated multiple times for the next forty-eight hours, after which it is ready to be mounted by your taxidermist. This is, of course, how my Nana taught me, and he was always passionate for this sort of thing. In south India, there is always moisture in the air, hence parts of the skin, which do not feel the effects of the preservative at the time, will simply decompose taking the hair along with it, leaving unsightly bald patches on the skin. In places where the skin is thick, it must be thinned down with a sharp knife so that the curing agent reaches the roots of the hair and hardens the whole skin.

I have never dealt with the business in question. Too bad to hear this. But, communication with the customer is an absolute fundamental to any business, especially a small business and NO MATTER WHO THE BUSINESS OWNER IS! That is just the way it is. There are several work arounds that I can think of for the business to correct the problem and apparently the owner has been fully aware of the problem for awhile--- hmm? Too bad customers have to take it to a level most all would rather avoid. I just had to fire a plumber mid-job because of a similar situation about communication. That's just the way it is!

I will store the information about this in my cranial file. Although I doubt I'll do anymore skin taxidermy and I can do any skull mount myself. But I do talk to various other hunters who are always asking about taxidermy work.

A shame it came to this...:(

I get zero pleasure from this

My plains game safari with my wife in 2014 was our 25th wedding anniversary gift to ourselves.
We had an absolutly fantasic trip.

Then the back side of our trip
The dip/pack/ship/taxidermy part I wish never happened......a total fiasco that I will never forget.

I am sure you don't, who would? But at least you have the important part that worked and the memories from it. In the end our memories are all we really have anyway.

This thread is the exact reason I don't want to have a taxidermist business. You get known/good, then busy, then busier, then it goes crazy and your tied to the business trying to stay afloat(not financially) keeping up, organized, pleasing every one. Then your so busy YOU must miss hunting seasons to look after customers animals. Then your best bud who has had a shitload of work over the years has a problem, life change, bankruptcy, divorce or any other of 100 reasons and things sour, because he has no money, your out tanning, skinning or form deposits and on and on. I have NEVER seen a taxidermist business that does not have stories of this. Dam shame/sad/upsetting but it is what it is=the reason I do my own stuff.

What you describe could be many types of buisness.....not just taxidermy.

Missing a specific target date I think most can forgive. But lack of communication when one call’s or emails for me is inexcusable. Drives me nuts. Some businesses think their the only game in town to act that callously, in this instance great taxidermy is out there one just needs to ask here for instance. This has been a recurring problem with many members. I wonder if he was a PH how many here would book a hunt with him. Sorry Dennis I me no harm but all the awards don’t mean much if customers are unhappy with certain aspects of the business.

..... and the biggest penalty for that business is about to be paid. A lost customer.

And here is the deal. If you have so much business that it is going to literally be years from completing, be honest with your customer. Maybe the person is willing to wait, but lets say you are older (as I assume there are quite a few on the forum who are), do you want to wait years when you are starting to enter the twilight of your life? I don't believe you will hurt you business by explaining your backlog of work. Johnnyblues you are 100% correct. Awards are nothing if your customers are not satisfied.

Do I understand correctly that this thread is two years plus old? tedthorn, you must be a very patient person. I am almost exactly one year in with the same person and have the same issues. Now I am wondering what to do. I don't mind waiting, but another year is excessive.
