Utahan sick of freezing my ass off on Elk hunts ready to travel to the dark continent to hunt the good stuff. Retired US Army Special Forces, then taught tactical and combat tracking in Nevada with the famed Rhodesian SAS Trooper David Scott-Donelan. Now living in Salt Lake working as a security consultant and dreaming of warmer climates (until summer when it will be a balmy 100F + around here). Looking forward to making new friends and doing some running and gunning. Out here for now, Ron.

Welcome to AH Ron! Thank you for your service and nice of you to join the conversation.

Hello and welcome!

Watch when you go and where you go in Africa because you can still freeze your ass off.
(Been there, done that.)

Welcome to AH.

Thanks for the welcomes! If anybody out there thinks it would be fun to strap on snow shoes and truck on out in 20 below zero, drop me a line (after your psych eval), I would enjoy hearing why this sounds good to you. I have two Cow Elk mitigation permits on the best private ground in Chalk Creek, just 25 miles from Park City Utah. Wine, women and song. Come get lickyed up and rub elbows with the rich and famous. This is my annual meat hunt to feed the hungry friends and family. There is good and bad with late season Elk tags. The bad news is: the Elk are still up on the high ground as the snow depth is minimal and it can hit 40 below out on the Wyoming border. The good news is: the meat won't spoil. I always spend a few days calling in trophy Bulls just for fun. The ones you never see with the right permit in your pocket. Looking forward to planning a hunt in Africa and this site looks like an excellent source to interact with professional hunters and guide services. Out here for now, Ron.

Welcome aboard Ron. Your assessment of AH is pretty much spot on. Folks here like to hunt, shoot, reload, build project rifles and the like. What caliber rifles do you own? What are you thinking about hunting in Africa? Regarding it being cold in Africa, that could be a function of two things. First where and when you are hunting there and second where you are from. I've only been twice, once in August of 2016 and once in July of 2018. Both trips were in the Northern portions of South Africa. Early morning temps were in the high 20(s) or low 30(s) but by 10:00 or so short sleeved shirts were the order of the day.

Welcome to AH!

Ron, welcome to the AH forum! Thanks for your service and here’s hoping you get to Africa sooner than later!

I would be interested in it if you pass. Please send me the info on the gun shop if you do not buy it. I have the needed ammo and brass.
