SOUTH AFRICA: Has Anyone Hunted With Bayete Group?

Any further information? My neighbor is in this boat and getting ready to set his dates. Have any clients confronted or asked Bayete or St. John what is going on? I dont think I have ability to send or recieve PMs

Koosdm, do you see or hear any news? Do you have contact info for the clients you are holding trophies of?
I was contacted by e mail just after the previous post by them. They asked me how much they owe me while the have it all. It was send to them by Paul their guy in SA after I had a meeting with him
After that e mail still nothin. Still no payment or plan.
I can send you the clients info if you contact me by e mail. I just want to respect their privacy.

New here, created a profile to keep up to date on this blog as our group appears to be in the same situation as others here and won an NRA hunt back in July booked for November 2020. We were originally booked at the Legadema River Lodge, but recently have been moved to the Mount Amanzi Game Lodge and looking to book our flight in early 2020.
James Mount Amanzi when I spoke to the manager was not licensed/permitted as a camp to accommodate foreign clients.
In SA your camp have to be inspected by our Nature Conservation and a permit issued by them to host accommodate clients.

Sorry for the delay in filling everyone in. (came back from vacation with loads to do at the business, then a flu, then a minor surgery etc...).

Anyway I can give you my perception as I'm not privvy to their actual finances nor have I been on safari before. I did ask a lot of questions and made a point of trying to confirm what is happening with the trophies.

Again, I must add that I do not regret the trip. We had a fantastic time. Both us and other attendees loved the PHs we worked with.

However... there are plenty of signs that they are walking a tightrope financially and I fear that someone with a deposit will be cancelled on before the trip, will not be picked up at the airport, will be housed somewhere completely unexpected (ie in a spare room of someone at the last minute) or the most likely... simply not have access to hunting grounds. We barely had enough access. We were fortunate that our PH was very good at getting us to animals, and at pressing the issue when they tried to send us back to another small game farm. But we were also happy after shooting 3 animals each. Had we wanted to continue to take more all week, we were running out of opportunities.

As I think I already mentioned, we overheard an episode where an employee was sent to the ATM to take cash to a landowner so that we could continue to hunt there, because they owed money from previous hunts. (this caused us to go in later than desirable that day). Each day, there was a debate about who was hunting where, and availability was apparently an issue.

Our trophies were not subject to being withheld, because Bayete is working in different places than a few months ago. The trophies were taken to the home of the current local manager, and we have since verified that the taxidermist picked them up a few days later and is working on them. However, who knows what will happen to those who go later. I suppose it depends where you hunt.

We did stay at Mt Amanzi. It was adequate and we were happy there; it was not the "luxury" implied when the trip was booked however. They were adequately staffed in terms of a great cook and cleaning staff.

to answer an above question, Friike was one of the PHs but was not ours. We did talk and drink with him in the evenings.

The PHs are not responsible for this; they are trying their best to make a good situation. I'm not sure if the local manager (was a new guy named Peter while we were there) even is party to the problem or is rather trying to do his best. I suspect if things get worse he will drop out of the picture also. In short, my impression is that Bayete is one guy in the US (St John) making promises and then hoping and begging that people in Africa carry out enough of his promises to keep his safari company going.

The idea of offering a "free" safari isn't unrealistic as I come to understand the operations. If you give people lodging and food, most will come and shoot more than the minimum number of animals. A few will come and shoot a LOT of animals. Thus they can make back their "free" lodging and also gain more publicity. We did meet some other PHs and operators there. One of them is very experienced, is coming to the US to the safari club meeting and we will try to connect with him some time during his trip to the US . He may be able to offer you a similar deal (ie provide you lodging, you pay a fee for what you shoot) and I think would be a safer bet than Bayete. But I would want you to decide that for yourself. PM me if you want me to tell you more or connect you with him. We are considering booking a trip with him next year but I don't want to become a middleman for anyone else. Unlike the guy upthread, we are NOT interested in becoming a booking agent for anyone.

I can appreciate keeping confidentiality...i guess i am not sure what i would ask them that would result in new info. I assume they know you are holding trophies...? True?
Do you know if this same issue is occurring at the Namibia camps that Bayete is advertising?
My neighbor has had two or three phone calls with St. John. At least he is communicating. Not sure what he is saying about the finance issues.

Can not say anything about Bayete and Namibia.
Situation here still the same.
Yes Bayete are aware of the fact that I am holding the trophies due to non payment.

This is all very concerning. I am part of a group of 8 that is ready to go in March 2020. I hope the trip goes well...

Biggest thing is try to get as much info from them as possible almost annoy them. they were ok on communication here until the last couple of days when they didn't tell us everything was not as advertised.

Will do. As far as I know our arrangements are complete. I contacted them about a month ago when I started seeing the threads saying they had trophies being held. The response was quick and stated that they had a former employee that had caused some issue, but everything was being taken care of. I am not as confident after reading the recent posts

Well this just keeps getting more bizarre and unprofessional.

I received an email from Bayete concierge (sent to my email address I registered with Bayete, which is btw not the same as the email I registered for this forum).

They are apparently lurking here but unwilling to comment and calling this an "online smear campaign".

I'm not going to repeat the whole email as this already feels ridiculous but I will say this:
-It was signed "Bayete Concierge". I told them if they have something to say or discuss, they should start by using a name.

-They felt compelled to correct my report about them having to get cash for a farmer because they owed him money. They stated this is a farmer that always wants cash up front. It's possible of course that I misunderstood that. But it doesn't change much about the perception. If that morning's events were not due to financial problems, then they were due to disorganization. On at least 3 days, we had to track down the manager before we knew where we could hunt at.

-I take exception to the idea I am participating in an "online smear campaign". I'm doing my best to report honestly. We did, as I stated have a great time and have great PHs. I reported that OUR trophies are at the taxidermist and no one is holding them. However, I also stated that we saw "red flags". It was in fact those red flags that led me to searching for reports on Bayete. I fully realize that businesses CAN get wrongly smeared online, but I wasn't brought into this conversation randomly. I became concerned when there was a change in concierge communication shortly before departure, a last minute lodging change with an odd explanation, and problems with even simple things like running out of bottled water or beer.

I hope for EVERYONE's sake that Bayete is able to continue to conduct hunts, pay anyone they might owe money to, and satisfy the expectations of everyone who has a trip planned with them.

Sending me anonymous emails does not inspire confidence that is happening.

Unfortunately it is difficult to tell whether people are basing reviews on unrealistic expectations, or facts. It sounds like all most everyone has has a great time, which is encouraging. I didn’t take anything on here to be a “smear campaign”. More like shared experiences, which for the most part have sounded favorable.

Except the parts where there were limited game and their animals are being held...?

I have no horse in this race, but why would a PH pay cash up front when you A. might not see the intended animal to hunt. B. you might not get a solid shot and/or could miss.
Maybe it's common practice, but I'm a fan of trusting your gut. If it feels shady, it probably is.

Hntcyco-1.........I thought you made a good, straight forward report, and included lots of good things too.......not typical of any smear campaign. That said, there is a lot of competition for/between African hunt operators. I think one could take pretty much any and all the sponsors on this site, names on a wall, throw a dart and get a great hunt. You learned a bit, did OK, and will do lots better next time......thanks for taking time to report.......................FWB

I am a Gamefarm owner in Limpopo province South Africa. I am one of the unfortunate gamefarm owners who was taken for a ride by St John and his bunch at BAYETE safaris. He still owes me about R60k since 2019 for game hunted on my farm and after lots of promises nothing is forthcoming. I am one of many and as no one in our area would allow them on our land until outstanding accounts are settled, they moved off to another area where they will just repeat the same modus operandi. They make use of freelance PH's and those poor guys are also not paid. I speak of experience as my son is one PH they still owe money. I just returned from the US and feedback I got is that the NRA is under the impression that Bayete is in a dispute with one SA outfitter and that being the reason they don't become involved. That is however far from the truth and if Bayete is downplaying this as a minor dispute with one outfitter, they are liars and openly misleading everyone. It is in any case hard to believe the the NRA can be so naive as to believe this BS from Bayete after all the negative comments about Bayete's unscrupulous behaviour and yet they still sell this bunch of crooks as a reputable safari company to their unsuspecting members. Attached herewith a sceenshot of St John's last communication with me before he blocked all communication with us.
If you support good, honest business one warning: STAY AWAY FROM BAYETE

Hope everyone is doing good!!

So my wife ended up winning this package at the NRA banquet in Grand Junction CO. Last October. Super excited!! My family and I are planning on doing this hunt this July. Bayete has absolutely been wonderful to work with!! They are very thorough, and the process is very well organized. We are going after 4 Warts, 3 Wildebeest a Kudu and a Zebra!!! We are spending a week in the Cape, chasing Sharks from a cage (Hopefully keep all our limbs!) And then a week with Bayete. Give a full report when we get back!

Can the real Travis Dove please stand up? :E Hmmm:
