Small Bore Double Rifles

Would sell my soul for a 303 double - or indeed a 22 RF SBS double -

have to make do with the 318 WR and the BSW Shul O/U in 7x65 r and 9.3x74r

Yeeess ... I suppose that you would need a bit of wild game meat in the freezer to intersperse with the shark meat. :) :A Stirring:

One of the elder gentlemen in our local shooting club , possesses an Anderson Wheeler Double Rifle in .303 caliber. It's the only gun he owns . Like Me , he is left handed. He has difficulty manipulating bolt action Rifles , since most bolt action Rifles are intended for right handed users ( I personally learnt how to manipulate a right handed bolt action from a very early age , but that is irrelevant for the purpose of this thread ).
.303 ammunition is very easily available and very affordable in our country , so l am guessing he had it made in .303 , due to easy availability of cartridges .
Anyway , he is extremely efficient with the gun ( even though he is in his fifties ) and drops deer with it every year . He told me that initially he got the .303 Double , because he was having difficulty shooting Lee Enfield bolt action Rifles.
He wasn't being able to operate the bolt fast enough for a follow up shot . But he really liked the .303 caliber . So he got the double. He also said that now , he is actually happier with the double .303 and would choose it over a left handed .303 bolt action rifle any day.
His skill with the weapon is amazing. I will try to get some pictures of his gun if he comes to the shooting club this Friday.

Dear 4 bore. A most interesting post which further goes to show the usefulness of a double rifle.

However, what's with the "even though he is in his 50's" bit? I take it you are a young whippersnapper. :)

Sir , l am so sorry if l sounded disrespectful . I didn't mean it. My own Grandfather is 75 and fires a 12 bore Holland and Holland Paradox gun with flawless accuracy without even flinching.
What l meant was that the gentleman looks very frail. But as his shooting skills proved , appearances can be quite deceiving.
And yes , l am going to be 23 :) Again , sorry if l sounded disrespectful.

Dear 4 Bore. No offence taken. It's all good healthy banter Dear fellow.

Not a proper small bore double rifle , but none the less quite interesting . One of the members of our local Shooting Club owns this Westley Richards 28 Bore side by side shotgun. He inherited it from his father . Due to both barrels being bored Cylinder and Cylinder , it's owner uses home made round ball loads in it ( what some Americans refer to , as " pumpkin ball " loads ). I am told that this is a practice , he learnt from his own father as a kid. He has taken Deer and feral goats with this gun. He brought it over to our shooting club's in house gun shop this Friday to have a new recoil pad fitted .
He was nice enough to let me fire off a couple of his hand loaded ball cartridges at our 25 metre outdoor range. The barrels were regulated well enough to achieve some suprisingly good groups . I tried firing a Birdshot cartridge through it , but the pattern was no good. He explained that he never fired a shot cartridge through this gun and only used ball cartridges hand loaded by himself. He is thinking of having a back sight added to it , sort as like a " poor man's double rifle " . Of course , being a westley Richards , it's hardly a poor man's gun ;)

Yes. It is often surprising how well a S X S shotgun can shoot roundball loads. I think there is a thread or two on the subject in the Shotguns section of A H Forums

A while back a thought hit me, I wondered if anyone has done a falling block double. I came across Bailey Bradshaw’s website after some digging around the web. They look really nice and certainly intriguing.
@Moosemind do you have some firsthand experience with his rifles? Have you shot one? Or had a chance to handle them? Would really enjoy hearing more about these rifles! How long has he been building these?
He now makes the Rising Block. New video on Facebook. Great concept and function.

Odinsraven, whats a Soul worth nowadays. Here is a .22 RF I built on a .410 SXS. Nothing fancy but fun. Thinking about doing a 32-40 now.... Thanks for looking and have a Safe Holiday Season!!!! DonT

Old post but I have been away for a long time. I have an 8x57 JRS that has become my go to hunting gun her in South Florida. Pedersoli Kodiak
Welcome back @tarawa , good to see you around.

I would love a O/U Krieghoff with two sets of barrels one in 9.3 x 74R and the other 7 x 65R......both with qd scope mounts....

I've several Blaser and Merkel Single shots that I have become very fond of and for some reason cannot shake the idea of getting a Merkel 141 in 8x 57 JRS.
The idea of a side by side double on the equivalent of a 28 ga. frame seems like it would be a joy to carry, and as I mainly shoot game 120 yds. and under, should work just fine.

Am I nutz?

Quien Sabe,

GWB

Gordy and Sons in Houston has a Winchester Model 21 in 22LR for sale. Only $35,000. Better hurry

I have two Heym in small Bore!

One is a 8x57IRS O/U DR and the other is the same gun with higher grade in 8x57IRS/5,6x52R (Savage HP)!!! Nice guns and good shooters.

I also have the same gun with a single shot configuration (built on the same receiver as the O/U DR) with presentation wood in 6,5x57R. Very lovely and light.

This thread is too good to die...

Right, so I want to put this out there because it doesn't look like it'll happen (no one makes one?) and it's driving me mad: I REALLY want an OU in 22 hornet... What an amazing little walker it would make- everything from hare/guineas to broadside shots on pigs... Awesome.
