RSA on the brink

Fair enough. And we need to pull for him. .......

I'll do my part.

Almost didn’t make it through the afternoon. Tried twice to hang a sable about ten feet off the floor. Can the holes be more awkwardly placed on a wall pedestal?!? I barely had enough sense to quit before one of us took a spill. Son and son-in-law will be in on Sunday and we can have some quality time together.

At least good sense returned. Good luck getting the trophy up safely.
That would be a really crappy way to avoid the bet.

With regards to SAA, they have outside management. I suspect they will figure out in time that the only way for SAA to be profitable (as the USA carrier have found out) is international flights and outsource most domestic routes to regional carriers. The already have smaller carriers in their portfolio, which I suspect those will be "spin offs" as independent carriers contracted to SAA similar to the USA model.

Robert Crandall on airlines: "I've never invested in any airline. I'm an airline manager. I don't invest in airlines. And I always said to the employees of American, 'This is not an appropriate investment. It's a great place to work and it's a great company that does important work. But airlines are not an investment.'"

"A lot of people came into the airline business. Most of them promptly exited, minus their money,"

be careful on those ladders,i dont bounce as good as i used to at 81.

I emailed the article to my PH in RSA and he takes a more optimistic view of the situation. Thinks the writer was a doom and gloomer and that Ramaphosa is doing a pretty good job but that it will take some time to turn it around.
I suspect in the end RSA will survive this and go on its more or less merry way as it has done all along with its ups and downs.

We are on! Only 10 years until I get to drink a marvellous bottle of wine!

One suggestion. If your going to insist on engaging in these sorts of hazardous activities, can you add a codicil to your will to protect my interests? Otherwise, lay off this stuff! I need you alive!

yel·low jour·nal·ism
noun
noun: yellow journalism; plural noun: yellow journalisms
journalism that is based upon sensationalism and crude exaggeration.

Frankly the Author lost me with, "It seems especially cruel to flag our imminent apocalypse just before we all go off on holiday for our annual enforced celebration of Christian beliefs and capitalist entropy."

But forcing myself to read on it only got worse...

SA may indeed be in trouble but who isn't? The Author however is the lowest form tabloid hack.

I´m with Fred, yes RSA is in trouble, who isn´t ?

You mean the sky is not falling.

Some acquaintances keep finding news about white farmers, and such, being killed (or worse), all the time in RSA. It is hard to tell here, far away, if that is the disaster that it sounds like in those news.

RSA govt may be trouble but I think the hunting industry is doing OK and will continue. They don't seem to be directly involved to much extent. At least, I hope they will continue to function well. I'm not ready to hang up my guns yet.

I am not sure the article is sensationalistic irresponsible writing. Maybe a little cynical, but fundamentally fact-based:
  • SAA, if memory serves, employ approximately twice as many people per airplane as do any other airlines in the world. That makes them clearly non competitive, hence ultimately insolvent. Will the government have the political will to face the unions, is THE key question for its survival.
  • The same issues, exaggerated labor and contracting costs, have been bringing Eskom to its knees for years. Here too, will the government have the political will to face the unions, clientelism, corrupt contracting etc. is THE key question for its reboot.
  • As to corruption and outright national theft in the RSA new "elites" of ANC, EFF, etc. and their dramatic cost to the country, I do not believe that there is much debate... The good news, in a cynical way, is that it has reached such a scale that even the foot soldiers of ANC seem to now resent it. It will not be stamped out overnight but there is progress. The social acceptance that the group's riches belong to the group's strong man, seems to have progressively given way to the conscience of national riches belonging to the nation. That is a HUGE socio-political shift.
My SA friends put Cyril Ramaphosa in a different category compared to its predecessors, and they are not excessively worried about expropriation without compensation. They generally do not believe that it will happen. Zimbabwe did a lot to debunk this utopia... As to white farmers murders, yes there have been some, but my friends say that many of the stories are decades old, and they dismiss the notion of living in terror...

Honestly, the best way we can help RSA is to keep going there to hunt and bring US $ to folks like KMG Hunting Safaris, Karoo Wild Safaris, Huntershill Safaris, and many others who actually work and provide value for the money they receive, gainfully employ people, use the land productively, and contribute to the country GDP.

Holy crap things are worse than I thought, you are just getting movies from the 2001. I say this sarcastically and jokingly.

I honestly believe RSA will be fine, there are too many good people and too much potential. Seems like people are constantly predicting a collapse or some sort everywhere. US has been going to collapse into a great depression since Obama was elected. Britian, EU, China, etc all the time, this is the year the wheels come off. Hell I read an article that the next America civil war is going to start in Virginia this year...point being writers only get paid if articles get clicks.

As far as the rest of Africa, I feel like countries go in cycles, things go good, then they dont, then they get good again. Selfishly thinking only about hunting, just need to time the upswing.

These two fellows opinions carry a lot of weight for me.
I don't think you guys are seeing the tongue-in-cheek in their replies...;):D
