Hello:
I’m teaming up with a friend to build a .500 A Square and looking for brass and reloading dies.
Also, any recommendations for scope base and rings suitable for this build would be greatly appreciated.
I’m also open to any suggestions as to fixed sights....folding peep....Really anything .500. A Square related.
I’m not interested in putting a “scout scope” on this rifle as it would be just look plain wrong.
Thanks in advance for any assistance !

Having fired several rounds through one, I can tell you from experience that if it is improperly stocked, the recoil can be fierce. That AA stock was very good, from a recoil standpoint. If you're not planning to spend much time behind it, less of a concern. But if you are, I would highly recommend giving significant attention to the stock.
I wish you the very best with it. It IS a thumper, no doubt.

Hi Michael:
Thanks for the assistance. I neglected to mention or ask for recommendations for the stock on this build. I was going to go with a synthetic stock, similar to the one I put on my .416 Ruger, but would really prefer a wood stock that can handle the recoil. I’m not a fan of muzzle breaks, but do enjoy rifles my friends fear or refuse to shoot.
My plan is to use this rifle in Namibia for buffalo and as my guide’s gun for AK Peninsula bear.
Stock suggestions are appreciated.

Treemantwo - I worked at A-Square for a time - Art was correct in his stock design - If interested, I can go into details and actually still have a blank or two that would be appropriate for using on a .500 A-Square.

I agree - no muzzle break, but you "must"/should use the 1.5x5 Vari-XIII Leupold (heavy duplex) or maybe one of their new ones with the firedot for black buffalo in the shadows washing out your black reticle. If you don't scout scope it. A larger scope will probably result in some scope bite on a regular basis. It is unlikely you are going to shoot at a dangerous game animal past 100 yards, so 5x will be fine.

Well, my thoughts/teaching from Art Alphin. Let me know what else I can do to help.

Good morning, Sir. I should have been more specific. Given the opportunity, I would try find one of the AA stocks and put it on a duplicator, or buy an Asquare. Seems like it was called a coil-check, or something like that. In any case, I have fired a great many rounds in the "real recoil" category and the A-square stock was one of the few designs where there was a noticeable difference. A recoil tube is another wise investment.

Thanks for the reply ! What makes this build and others so enjoyable is the feedback and directions guys like yourself are willing to offer.
Sure ! I’m at attention and listening.
I would be interested is seeing what you might have as far as a stock blank too. My thought was to go wood for traditional purposes. The synthetic option was considered bro meet the needs of my guiding in the harsher elements of the Alaska Peninsula.
If it’s easier I can be reached by phone or email as well.

The Leupold 1.5-5 Vari X III is what I have on my Ruger .416 Alaskan....no muzzle brake...no scout scope deal.
I’m actually looking for another .416 Ruger Alaskan as a mate to mine for client’s use.
Thanks for the help !
Sincerely,

Thanks Michael ! The more information the better and I appreciate anything you can offer in the way of advice.

OK - here is the little bit I can tell you

Art worked with Calico to get blanks with next to ZERO figure/sapwood in them - that weakens the stock - with .500 A-Square, it will split - the standard grade wood doesn't look spectacular, but it will stay together - build a tool that works vs. being pretty and snaps after you shoot it

The butt is huge as compared to other stocks - this is important to PERCEIVED recoil, as it spreads the force out over a larger area

The pistol grip should come into a target/vertical handle to enable you to pull back into your shoulder more easily, as opposed to the more slender, angled back normal hunting rifle pistol grips

The stock is fat/thick - it helps lessen the perceived recoil due to being beefy/heavy
