Good evening Africa Hunting friends. I have been a member for several years now and occasionally post hunting reports. I have been to Namibia twice and am going again in April with three friends at Uitspan Hunting with Tiene and Michael Duvenhage. I cannot wait! This report is different in that it is about a humble whitetail deer hunt on my small swamp behind my home in Wisconsin. But as I begin I would like to dedicate this report to my new friend, Kawshik Rahman, from Bangladesh. I have been so impressed by his contributions to our AH community that I wanted to thank him in this way. And if imitation is the sincerest form of flattery I am intentionally copying the format of our friend. So dear readers let us begin.

The hunt begins with some notes about equipment for my hunt. The Courtney Safari boots worn during parts the hunt were graciously provided for me by our good friend Ridgewalker. Some may remember that I was agonizing over whether to spend the money on high quality Courtney boots or to be frugal and go with much less expensive brands. Well, Ridgewalker contacted me and had an extra pair in my size and sold them to me at a very inexpensive price. Thank you again—you are incredibly gracious!

The next piece of equipment involves an emotionally meaningful Barlow folding knife. My uncle Herman (son of German immigrants) often took my brothers and me on hunting excursions as a youth. It would be for rabbits or pheasants on a routine basis. But, later in life as Whitetail deer numbers increased in our area of the state of Wisconsin he also took us deer hunting. The last time I saw this Barlow knife it was being used to field dress a deer. I was able to inherit this knife when Herman’s son Ken passed away. It is precious to me.

The third item I would like to mention is my Remington 700 with Leupold scope in 270 Winchester caliber shooting Federal premium 150 grain Nosler Partition bullets. The reason I mention this is because many of the forum members helped talk me through which rifle and ammunition to use in my hunting context of very thick cover and short range. Thank you for your help. It worked to perfection.

After this extensive introduction the actual hunt is quite simple. I hunt from a homemade tree stand located along a creek in my cattail swamp. The afternoon of opening day I had decided to take a doe for venison if the opportunity arose. I have not taken a doe in years as I was always waiting for a buck to come through. But this year I decided I wanted some good venison. In the late afternoon shortly before dark a large doe emerged from the thick cover along the creek. It was about 75 yards away and standing in about the only place where I could get a clear shot. I had a good rest on the edge of my stand and took aim at a slightly quartering towards me shot. The Nosler partition did its job and the doe was down within 5 yards. I climbed out of my stand and found the deer right away. I used my Uncles Barlow knife to field dress the doe, dragged it to a lane and walked out to get my car to get the deer home—only a half mile away. My nephew Karl, brother Kevin and I butchered the deer a few days later. I enjoyed my first steaks a couple of days ago.

I am writing this to illustrate that great hunts are not only the exotic ones. This day happened to be my 63 rd birthday. I had a fantastic time. Many of you helped me to have this wonderful day. Thank you for being supportive of my many questions. You are good friends.

Very good report Brian! Some fine equipment there! I have an old Barlow in my collection, but it’s value is nothing in comparison to the history of yours.
Thanks for the credit! I hope the history of the Courtney’s replay as well for you as they did for me.
I’ll be anxiously waiting for your Namibia report!
Your friend Ridgewalker AKA Phil.

Congratulations , Gesch. And what a way to spend a birthday . It was an amazing hunt . I love the Remington Model 700 rifles and the .270 Winchester would be my preferred calibre for shooting cheetal deer and village panther .
Your Barlow knife is beautiful . Since it is German , dare l assume that it is Solingen carbon steel ? Solingen carbon steel , is the best in the world . It is used to make straight razors .
You have the makings of a first class writer. Do share a venison recipe or 2.
White tail , is it ?
And keep writing .

Good heavens ! I am elated that you chose to dedicate an article to me , my American friend . And what an article , it is ! You did not copy me . You have surpassed me in terms of writing . It is my earnest request that you continue writing . This will hopefully be the first of your many adventures to share on this beautiful community with us fellow Shikaris .
Belated Happy Birthday and l can think of no way better to celebrate one's birthday , than a shikar .
Crudeoildude said it best. Sometimes the best Shikars are not in an exotic location in a foreign country , but rather the ones right in our home-land .
Regarding the Remington model 700 bolt operation rifle you used , it is one fine item. I like the .270 Winchester , almost as much as l like the 7 millimeter Remington magnum cartridge . During our time , the telescopic sights from the firm , Weaver were considered to be one of the best .
Your Barlow knife has developed such a wonderful patina.
I always dreamt of owning a Schrade Old Timer Barlow pocket knife myself , in 1095 carbon steel . Like old Poton , l am curious myself as to what firm manufactured your beautiful Barlow knife .
On a related subject , are white - tail deer larger or smaller than a mule deer ?
Kindest regards ,
Your Shikari friend,
Sgt. Kawshik Rahman ( Retd )

The Schrade company now belongs to Taylor brand , Kawshik . All of their knives now have a cheap stainless steel blade and are made in China .
By the way , when l last went to America in 2017 , l came across a company called " Case Knives " . They are beautiful pieces of traditional American workmanship and use carbon steel blades . I purchased a " trapper " model from them and am most impressed.

That is so unfortunate to hear . When did this catastrophy occur ?

Thanks so much for your kind words. In regards to my uncles knife I don’t know where it came from. The uncle is German but I think the knife is American. My father Wilfred, raved about Solingen steel and bought me a hunting knife made with it.Thanks for your interest.

Thanks for your response. You are very kind. The rifle is an inexpensive model but has not let me down. It is quite accurate in field condition. I really enjoyed using the knife for its intended purpose again. It brought back memories of my uncle Herman. White tail deer are generally some what smaller than mule deer. However they vary in size with northern specimens running larger. I think the White Tails of Alberta Canada May be the largest of the species. Thanks again for you kind words. Your friend. Brian

Gesch, I too feel a greater connection when hunting on my own property, what size parcel do you hunt? Do you live there full time? Have you ever considered Bow hunting?
Shootist43, My father gave me 20 acres. My wife and I bought 15 more and my brother Jeff owns 45 that I also hunt. I live on the edge of the property. I have considered bow hunting but my business and other responsibilities seem to impinge on the bow hunting. I will reconsider my ways!

If you gentlemen ever happen to visit Bangladesh , you should really come to the tea gardens ( where Kawshik lives ) . Dozens of Cheetal deer and wild boars ( and occasionally a bear or 2 ) routinely come into the property from the forests of Maulvibazaar , every autumn and winter . Since they damage tea plants and are hunted over private land ( as opposed to forested area ) , we can hunt any that comes into the property without any bag limits or written police permission ( which we normally need when hunting in forested area in Bangladesh ) . You would actually love it .
I go there once every week during this time of the year and the hunting is magnificent. I use my old Belgian shot gun , loaded with Lethal Ball cartridges, while Kawshik uses his .22 Winchester magnum rim fire calibre bolt rifle.
Anyone bringing a .270 Winchester or a .30-06 Springfield rifle ( or something similar of their choice ) would have a very good time.
In fact , it would be our privilege to have you as our guests if you ever find yourselves in Bangladesh.

Poton and Kawshik, don't be a bit surprised if someone takes you up on this generous offer. Sharing time with you guys, let alone a beer and a steak over a campfire would be a treat as well as an honor.

Conside it done , Shootist43. Not to mention , a bottle of Old Monk Rum , the finest rum in the world , in my humble experience ( if you drink rum , that is ) .

Gesch, if nothing else look into getting and using a cross bow. They are very similar to using a rifle and deadly accurate out to 50 yards some a bit further. My bow preference is Excalibur because they can be maintained in the field. I've been a two season hunter for 62 years. Living as close as you do to your deer stand(s) it is easy to sneak in a hunt prior to going to work or even after supper.

That is a capital idea which Poton has given.
Should anyone of you gentlemen ever come , you may bring any rifle calibre you gentlemen desire , except .303 bore .If you bring one rifle and eighty cartridges , it will suffice for a nice Shikar . For bird hunting , you can borrow one of our shot-guns . Poton owns two shot-guns , and l own two , as well . If you prefer over - under , you can use my Beretta model s.686 Special.
If you prefer side -by-side , you can use my 12 bore Westley Richards . If you prefer auto loader , then Poton's German shot-gun made by the firm , Wisco , will suit your needs. It has 76 millimeter chambers and removable chokes.
Even though neither of us own a pump operation shot-gun , if that is what you prefer , we can easily arrange a friend to provide one as well.
We can arrange the cheetal skin of any cheetal deer you shot , to be exported back to the United States of America with no fuss.

Thanks again for your interest and support. I would surely enjoy coming to hunt in your region. Even more interesting would be the opportunity to spend time with you and Kawshik and learn about your beliefs and culture. Perhaps I could also share of my beliefs and world view. It would be a magnificent adventure—and all done in the context of fellow hunters. In the meantime writing and responding to articles will need to suffice! Thanks for your invitation. As I have shared with Kawshik you would always be welcome in my home in Wisconsin. Have a great day.
