IMPORTANT: Firearms Export Alert – Use of Form 4457 for Temporary Firearms Export

Not correct I am afraid Phil.
If you do the quiz you will see the answer (see my previous post with screen pic of the quizz, the answer is in the right column):
#1 an export license is not required
#2 you "MUST file the electronic export information in AESDirect"
#3 "Prior to departing the U.S., you MUST verbally declare the items to U.S. Customs and Border Protection and provide confirmation that the electronic export information was submitted into AESDirect."

This is IN ADDITION to the CBP form 4457.

The confirmation is the ITN (Internal Transaction Number). "ITN is an Automated Export System (AES) generated number assigned to a shipment confirming that the EEI was accepted and is on file in the AESa filing number" (http://www.tradecomplianceinstitute.org/p_show_faq_answers.php?id=417)

At least this is the way I understand it...

Apparently filing the electronic export information in AESDirect is done on line and I would 'assume' (we all know how to spell it) that you get a filing confirmation ITN immediately on line.

Yes Nathan, for my September 2020 safari, I intend to get one more annual iteration of the 4457 (at least this one will be good until Sept 2022) AND I intend to file on line and get the ITN.
Like you, I just do not want to run the risk of being stuck in an airport for a day at CBP on my way out, loosing a day's hunt, or on my way in, fighting to keep my rifles, and second since CBP registers the rifles anyway upon return (see my earlier post), entering them one more time in Uncle Sam's database is not going to change much...

I don’t have the time to do it now again. But seemed like If questions answered were the gun was staying in my possession, the total guns were 3 or less and ammunition was 1000 or less rounds and I wasn’t selling the guns, I was good

Wow we are going back 2015.

From what I gathered taking the test, nothing more than the 4457 is needed.

Has any one actually gone thru the whole process of registering for a ITN number yet. I just spent a few confused minutes on the site and came away with nothing but a head ache. The AESDirect site says you need to log in, can't seem to find info on how to set up account.

Like you, I never could figure it out. After many phone calls to my local C&BP office, an officer suggested that I contact Coppersmith since they were already set up in AESDirect. I shot them an email and by the end of the day I had my ITN number. It did cost me $100 for them to do it....ridiculous....Glad I did though, because I was asked to provide it at customs on the way back home in Dallas.

Well I have typed and deleted a response a half dozen times so far. I am just flabbergasted at the friggin hoops one must go thru. If they want us to do this they SHOULD BE REQUIRED BY LAW to provide a system/method of doing it that a 4th grader could use!!!

I did it back in 2015 and from what I remember it didn't take very at all.

Then it ended up not needing it

I don't disagree! Hopefully I can figure it out how to do it on my own before my trip next year!

Ok working thru it. In order to get an account for the AESDirect account you need to have a EIN number here is a site explaining this.
https://www.census.gov/newsroom/blo...company-how-can-i-register-for-aesdirect.html

Once you have the EIN you can apply for the AESDirect account. You want to file as an exporter, I just got done doing that. Waiting for the email from them now so I can access the account

I do not think so guys. I think you may have looked in the wrong column. Do your own stuff, obviously, but here is what I get:
- three or fewer firearms? check.
- not selling the guns? check.
- fewer than 1,000 rounds of ammo? check.
- looking in "rifle" column (as opposed to "shotgun" column)? check.

Apparently jasyblood, tested it for us...
Glad I did though, because I was asked to provide it at customs on the way back home in Dallas.

Just my $0.02... (y)

Working thru the filing now. It would be nice if there were explicite directions for our situation. Kinda just picking what I believe are the right answers for the information they want. Going to do some more Googling to see if there are better directions for what we need to do

Ok my Google Fu is working pretty well right now, found this from back in 2015 but it is still pretty much on the money as far as what we need to do from what I can see.

You would think that if this is happening that hunters would be reporting it as they leave or come home.

How many member on the forum here have gone over and came back this year with no problems? Also I haven't looked but it might also include those going to Canada and there have been a lot of hunters crossing the northern border.

I was told that it is currently on affecting hunters traveling through DFW, but would be rolled out to everyone soon.

The wife and I went to Romania and back in September. Only thing customs asked us for was our 4457. In Philadelphia when we cleared customs the agent thanked us for having the proper paperwork. We also went to Namibia in February and again all customs in DFW wanted was the 4457.

Well to tell ya the truth once I got it all figured out it wasn't that hard at all. I would just assume have it with me than to be asked for it and not have it.

Returned thru Chicago Ohare in mid November, 4457 requested only, and on my way.

And yet just above your red arrow, it says:

With less than three firearms or 1,000 rounds of ammunition there is a license exemption available.

Have to love the government.

Thanks for posting the new 4457 with 2022 expiration date.

SCI should be able to get rock solid answer as to whether this is a requirement or not for any upcoming departures with a firearm out of the country. I went thru this back in 2015 and completed the application only to realize it was not needed. Seems as though it would be simpler to have TSA or CBP confirm the weapon upon departure and confirm reentry into the US, to alleviate the temproary export and reimport ?? I can assure you that CBP has a record of your firearm in their Data if you have ever used your 4457 for clearance back into the US. noted it in ATL and again confirmed in Chicago upon reentry. Have used the same rifle for the last six years and CBP has all the information on file.
