Well after reading here a few weeks I took the plunge and did what I never thought I would do and booked the first safari for my son and i.
18 months is a long time to wait but will give the time we need to prepare and save the rest of the money.
Booked with henry griffiths due to great deal and good reviews from everyone I contacted. And for first trip liked the joburg pickup and avoid extra flights.
Planning to use all recommended agents for travel and rifle permits, export and such.
Anyway, super excited and looking forward to the adventure

Congratulations! I look forward to reading the hunt report when yall return!

Awesome, congrats!!

Just so you know that you will be planning your second hunt on the flight home from your first one.

That's what I'm afraid of. Was planning my 4th alaska trip when the Africa bug hit. Got on here after reading JimP on another forum as we live close to each other

Congratulations.

Congrats!!

Congratulations, glad the bug bit ya. Eighteen months of planning is just about perfect for a first timer. Start shooting off sticks as fast as you can. Small bores i.e. 22(s) & HMR17(s) make for cheap practice.

Congratulations, and hope you have an awesome experience on your trip. Looking forward to the story and pictures after your return.

You'll have a blast I'm sure. As other have noted, start planning future hunts now (y)

go on and start saving now for 2022...

addictions are expensive.. and safaris are like doritos.. you cant do just one..

:)

That is my plan, I have a trigger stick tripod I use occasionally but have never practiced much with it. I've always gone prone whenever possible but know that likely won't be the case there

Check with the outfitter and ask him how you'll be shooting and if prone or sitting in more common than standing and off of sticks. While my PH packed a Bog Pod all of my animals except for the impala were from the sitting position and the impala was standing off of the Bog Pod.

The terrain that we were hunting in was just set up that way were we couldn't shoot from the prone and sitting was the best way to take the shots

For certain practice shooting off sticks! I’ve shot most every way possible there. From embedded in an acacia bush on the side of a slimy, wet termite mound to prone to off hand to sitting backwards while resting on a small branch, ... etc. Most common will likely be standing, off sticks.

Start the piggy bank for ‘22. :)

Oh no Wade! You’re going to get addicted!:ROFLMAO::LOL::D
You two are going to have a grand time! Henry is a fun time.

Congratulations, welcome to the addiction.
18 months might seem long now, but after, it will be part of the memory of your first hunt. My first trip was a family trip too and we had a blast shooting together, watching Africa TV shows and videos, and just discussing the trip every time we got together. Those memories are as much a part of that first trip for me.
Looking forward to your report.

Likely rifles to be used are our. 300 win mags. Mine is a sako AV and his is a ruger hawkeye left hand.
Both shoot hornady superformance 165 GMX well and thought it would be good for both of us carrying the same cartridge.
The gmx seems to smack a bit harder than the ttsx we've used in the past with similar penetration but I've only 2 seasons to judge it by.
Includes mule deer, whitetail, a couple pronghorn, and 2 caribou.

Congratulations, welcome to the addiction.

Hunting without my son does not bring nearly the satisfaction as when we're together.
