Hi.
I am looking at prices to hunt Lion next year.
I would like to do it on foot, with minimal luxuries( I'm Australian) and the hunt would mean as much to me as pulling the trigger, I hunted Cape Buff in Zimbabwe, and the experience was a life changing, I loved it, hard work, lots of walking , ( 8 days to get my buff), but watching the trackers ply there trade, the knowledge that the PH had, and just seeing the animals in the wild, was beyond description.
So what I am looking for is a no frills, bells or whistles Lion hunt, I don't need to be accommodated in a high end lodge, so hopefully it will keep the cost down, and I can afford to go.
Cheers. Baz.

PS. My buff hunt 4 years ago cost me, (as there was two of us) $4500.

Good day sir,
Are you interested in hunting a male Lion or Lioness?

Take Care,
Marius Goosen

I see African Discount Hunts are offering a male lion non trophy , for $7500 for Australian hunters, on a farm, which I'm not keen on.
The $5000 discount is because we can't import any Lion product into Australia.
Has any forum members hunted with them?
The price is reasonable.
Cheers Baz.

I booked my lion hunt through them a few years ago and all went as expected. Like you said, it is a farm hunt, so keep that in mind. I also have had two friends book lion hunts through them last year and both went well, with no complaints. PM me if you want anymore details.

Hi Baz
Welcome to AH. I think the best place for you to be if you are looking for information about African Hunting.
I hope that I might be able to give you some idea of the choices you have.
Firstly, it sounds like you are looking for a hunt over a trophy - the one is considerably more expensive than the other!
South Africa offers the best there is in terms of price and without wanting to ruffle any feathers, are mostly farmed lions. You will get a magnificent trophy for $15,000 but in general, you will be hunting in fenced areas.
If you are looking for the thrill of hunting wild lion then you will have to go further North to Zimbabwe, Zambia or Mozambique but you won't find much below $60,000 and you will pay $100,000 plus if you hunt with one of the top outfits. There is not much that can be saved on the costs by roughing it as the biggest cost comes from the very high maintenance costs that come with operating a wilderness, unfenced area. Here in Matetsi we have to keep an area the size of Delaware free from human and domestic animal occupation as well as keep on top of the poaching all in a remote bush environment but you won't see a fence or a hut or another person when you are hunting here.
Feel free to contact me (or any of the other great contributors to this forum) if you need any further information.

Otherwise enjoy the planning phase of your safari and take your time going through the offers carefully until you get the one that feels right for you!

Best regards
Abe

A free range male, regardless of trophy quality, will be in the 40-50K range (US) before adding little extras like travel. Often much more. The best "deal" would be a lioness behind a fence. I personally am not interested in paying the former and have no interest in the latter. That is not a criticism. Several members of our community have done the captive bred hunt, and come away very satisfied with the experience. I would expect someone to be up on the net shortly.

Thanks Guys.
There is a wealth of very sound knowledge on this forum, and I thank those that contributed to my question regards the Lion hunt, as for the free range Lion hunt, well it's off the bucket list I'm afraid, that's a years wage for me. LOL.
And the cheaper option a captive bred Lion, I am afraid I couldn't do it.
Cheers Baz.

I went to SA and hunted a lioness with Pawprint Safaris. I also tagged along on a Lion and Lioness hunt with @Ridgewalker. The farm we went to was Reitzdale in the Kalahari.
We had a lot of fun hunting there. Honestly, you can make the hunt as difficult as you'd like it to be. It's 12,000 acres of land, and if you want, they will do the hunt entirely on foot. We did a lot of walking for our lions, but we also used the truck to find the initial tracks crossing the road. We had a blast on that hunt. I also took a Cape Buffalo and some plains game.
The lodge was very nice, but nothing more extravagant than neccessary. Overall, I would highly recommend it.

+1 with what Toby458 said.

+2 with @TOBY458 I went to the same place

How about a West African lion? Very reasonable trophy fee. They don't have much mane but its definitely a real wild hunt. You would certainly have a good hunting experience. Combined with a buffalo or something else interesting it could be a real adventure;)

Bob, is it high fenced?
As Toby mentioned, that he hunted on a 12,000 acre property, I'm not trying to be a smart arse , but down here in Australia, that's a paddock. LOL.
A cattle station that I have hunted on for 30 years here in North Queensland is 960, 000 acres, and I hunted buffalo in September in the Northern Territory on approximately 3 million acres.

Well I haven't hunted there yet but I am quite sure it is wild and unfenced. It is central/Western Africa I'm talking about. Not sure which countries still allow lion hunting but you'll have to do some research. Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon. Not sure of the present status of C.A.R. These are the places you can hunt Bongo, Lord Derby Eland, wild Roan, Dwarf Forest Buffalo, Savannah Buffalo. And the jungle or forest areas have chimpanzees and gorillas.

I think you have more worries regarding terrorists and Ebola than fences. I think it is about 7000 to 8000 kilometers from where Toby hunted. ;) But I'm going to get to these areas within the next couple years.... Maybe even Early 2020.

The hunt is expensive, but the lion is cheap. Totally different pricing structure than South Africa. Totally different World I think... However if you get dialed into the right places, such as here, and watch for deals. You might be able to pick up a cancellation deal or a finish out the season deal. Let some Outfitters know you are interested and in a budget.

If you want to try to compare every aspect of hunting in Oz with Southern Africa, you will end up with a mess of apples and oranges...
Absolutely correct Tim. But I was not talking about Southern Africa. West Africa, or some people call it Central Africa. Long ways from South or even Southern Africa hunting areas.

Bob, as you research this region I would be very interested in what you find. I have been corresponding with a couple of operators in the region. It sounds like old Africa, much less developed than Zim and other common destinations.

I’ve done a bunch of research and the big guy willing I’m headed to Benin in 21 for buffalo, roan, bushbuck and hartebeest. A lot will depend on what the terrorist situation there is at the time. I’ve reached out to several members here to see if anyone’s interested in coming along.
