500 Jeffery VS 505 Gibbs

Excellent. Thank You … and thoroughly understood, as a client, both would be more than enough. I've spent a lot of time running the Lott through its paces to practice Placement, most Important. But again, appreciate the input out of the 2 .50's, whether it would be used in a Hunting application, or out of Novelty!

iv got a 458lott on a factory cz550 458 gun, recoil is stout and a cz custom shop 550 in .505 gibbs.

i love both of them, the fact that jeffery uses the .510 is a pretty good draw card, but i love the .505 case too much.

recoil from my .505 is up there with the lott.

what ever you do it will be smiles all round.

ive been looking into to both these cartridges and for the most part they seem pretty similar. both are able to push 525gr/535gr bullets at 2300+ and both will push a 600gr bullet at 2100+ which means both fill my desires. the 500 Jeffery uses a more common bullet size but the 505 Gibbs case seems a little better built (in my OP). for what ever reason it seems the 600gr bullet for the 500 jeffery is a little harder to find since its typically loaded with a 570gr bullet (i prefer the 600gr for better SD).

which do you like better and why?

thanks

I've shot several cape buffalo with the 500 Jef and 570 gr. TSX bullets at 2150 fps. About half those bullets have been recovered. The others passed through. If I hit the buf at close range in the near shoulder, the bullet generally stops under the off side hide. If I double lung the bull, the bullet generally passes through. I've never shot a bull more than once with the 500 Jef and that load and I never allow those hunting with me to "follow-up" shoot my bulls, unless they are charging, which has happened with smaller calibers. My experience with the 500 Jef is that the bull is so screwed by the first shot, that he is not capable of charging.

To say one is better than the other is splitting hairs.

They are different from each other. There are things that are better or more desirable about each cartridge. With properly made ammo, I do not think one has an advantage over the other. It is the nuances that make them preferable or not. Long action versus standard action......that type of stuff.

I agree, they have different strong points. It’s just which one you prefer. I have both.

If I had the money and the wife would let me ... Hartmann and Weiss 505 Gibbs built on a magnum square bridge Mauser action I believe

I’m thinking on the sako about having a longer mag box bilt. I want to go from 350-355 to370-375. I haven’t miked the action yet and I don’t know if the 500 and the 416 Shari the same action. May kirsh can weigh in here. Spell checked again.

500j Sako magazine is to the hair CIP
meashurement. 416 is a tad longer in the same XL Action. I am trying to figure that out myself.

I have a good smith. I will talk to him in a few weeks as I am on the road. He did say if i went with the 602 for a 500j he wanted to build a new straight single feed drop box so I think he will be able to do this. I’ll let you know what I find and he can make 2 mag boxes. There should be very little wood work.

Well even if you make new magazine box will the chamber be ok? That is why I bought an AHR #3 UPGRADE 500J.

We will know after we measure every thing but know what you mean.

A small question on the 500/505. How many rounds can typically fit in the magazine? 2+1? 3+1? 4+1?

The +1 being the round in the chamber, that one would be able to push partly into the magazine and have a Mauser 98 style bolt pick it up, without having to force the claw over the rim.

This is an article from the American Hunter that was published in 2020 comparing the two cartridges.

3x1 in either, 5x1 in my 458 Lott.

3 down in the Magazine in my CZ 550 500 Jeffery. Once I chamber a round it's 2+ 1 so I guess I'm saying the same thing as Krish.

I'd be quite happy with 500 Jeff or 458 Lott on my R8

As I already have a 404 Jeff, I'm just not sure I need it as I'm only guiding and not deliberately putting me and clients in harms way
