Thomas Cook travelers worldwide reassured

HAN: Events a wake-up call for local industry
Ronelle Rademeyer

As of late yesterday, no official figures were yet known of exactly how many British tourists who made their travel arrangements through Thomas Cook are currently in Namibia on tour is not.

“We do not have any statistics on how many British citizens from Namibia will not be repatriated and prefer not to guess the number, ”said Ms. Naomi Boys, spokesman for the British High Commission, in reply said on questions about the Thomas Cook crisis.

She explained what the affected tourists were doing, and told them the first step should be to visit the special website, thomascook.caa.co.uk.

“It provides comprehensive information on flights, accommodation and also provides general travel advice to affected travelers who booked their vacations through this travel agency. This includes the number of an international customer service center which has been in operation since 6am Monday.

“The British government has made special arrangements to make sure the process runs as seamlessly as possible, with the least potential impact on UK tourists currently on holiday, ”she says in her email.

Thomas Cook, founded in 1841, is the oldest travel agency in the world. It collapsed financially on Monday and virtually 600,000 holidaymakers left stranded around the world.

As a result, at least 150,000 Britons must be repatriated to Britain. It is the largest peace time repatriation attempt in British history, Reuters reports.

According to the Associated Press (AP), there were 14,500 of the stranded British passengers from around the world with flights on their way back to Britain.

CONDOR

Thomas Cook owns hotels, holiday resorts and airlines and serves 19 million people a year in 16 countries. Condor, what two flying from Germany to Namibia once a week is one of the shipping companies in the Thomas Cook stable.

Meanwhile, Condor, which has a code-sharing agreement with Air Namibia regarding its booking system, said it was financially able to continue its flights.

"Mr. Principal Ralf Teckentrup, in a letter to the Common Sales Agent (GSA), told Condor Flugdienst GmbH and its subsidiaries are financially able to continue their operations, ”Air Namibia said on inquiry.

“Thomas Cook Aviation and Thomas Cook Airlines Balearics who do flights on behalf of Condor can also continue. Furthermore it we applied for a bridging loan with the state, ”states the letter by Tenckentrup.

“We can continue to pay for the services needed to continue our flights from funds from the Condor
Airline EmbH entity. We apologize for not being able to pay for services rendered in the past not, ”he says to the GSA.

HOSPITALITY

When asked about the impact on Namibia, Ms. Gitta Paetzold, the executive director of the Hospitality Association (HAN), the UK tourism market accounts for only about 3 per cent of foreigners visiting the country.

She says although Thomas Cook's bankruptcy in that respect will not have a huge impact on tourism in Namibia, is what happened to be a huge wake-up call for the local industry. “It shows us that tourism as we know it has changed. Earlier years, all tourists booked their holidays through travel agencies such as Thomas Cook. ”

She says technology allows people to plan their holidays and make travel reservations themselves.

Paetzold says the German market, which forms the largest part of the Namibian tourism market, is usually discussed by travel agents because they have the peace of mind to be able to make claims if something goes wrong.

However, she believes the local industry should take note of what happened and use new methods to bring tourists to the country to attract.

GASVRYHEIDSVERENIGING

By navraag oor die impak op Namibië, sê me.

For me it´s hard to understand that this has come as a surprise.

In business circles it has been known for at least two years that this company is heavily indebted.
