Great hunt! Thanks for sharing it with us!

Mongolia is a very big place with basically no roads except near the capital. It takes a long time to get anywhere! We arrived at the first forest camp and set up. We glassed that evening and saw one doe far in the distance. A foggy storm rolled in on us and ruined the next mornings hunt. Misty fog with lots of wind kept us in our tents. We finally got to get out and do some glassing and our main guide, who was a professional wolf hunter, located two wolves. They were near a salt cave licking the salt and no doubt smelling roe deer tracks. The were hen on the move and no way for us to get on them. After seeing the wolves we decided to move camp. Another beautiful forest to camp in (pics to come). The weather improved but was cold at night. The hunting situation was bad really bad. Lots of wolves and incredible late summer rain brought tremendous grass in the forest that gave Roe deer no reason to come out in the open to graze. It looks like my luck was running out when a buck appeared very close to us. One of the guides had it go near his position but he never saw it to warn us. The hunting was more like sightseeing thus far and my gun was not loaded. I got into a prone position and carefully loaded up but the buck heard me and ran. I was just about to take a shot when he went out of sight. No sooner had he left our sight a wall of fog came down right where he was then on towards us as if to say this hunt is over! We spent a few more days but it proved futile. They were willing to stay but I realized that after 6 long days it would be a complete accident if we got a shot at a Roebuck this year.
What a disappointment after a heroic start. Well I got to see most of Mongolia and as with any hunt made some new friends. Asia is not for everyone but if you plan, prepare and book with the right people you should have a good trip.
Regards,
Philip

You didn't get a Roebuck, but the trip had to have been quite the experience
Congratulations

Congratulations on some wonderful animals and adventures. Spectacular landscapes.
Gutted you didn't get the Roe buck but it's hunting.
I acquired a very old set of Siberian Roe antlers years ago and they're hung above the stairs. I see them every day and promise myself one day I will get myself one.

A very successful hunt in spite of not getting the roe deer, IMO! Thanks so much for taking us along on a hunt this old guy will never get to do in person! Grand! Absolutely grand!
Can’t wait to see more pictures! Awesome terrain!

@Philip Glass This hunt look like a lot of fun and hard work. My kinda hunt. Love the fact that you took your first billy before you got to camp!!

Congratulations on a great hunt. In a way it is nice to leave a bit of unfinished business somewhere out in Asia. And there are some slightly less remote options to scratch that Siberian Roe Deer itch someday. I can say I am looking forward to my trip to the Kamchatka with equal parts excitement and trepidation.

Thanks for the great report and congratulations!!

Phil, that was a great hunt indeed, one which most of us will never be able to take. Thanks to your write up were able to "tag" along. Out of curiosity, how often did /do you practice 500 Yd. shots?

Spectacular journey,outstanding scenery.
Thank you for sharing.
It's a good thing you're tough as leather (y)

I have my own range so I am able to shoot most anytime. I actually only practiced to 400 most of the time but did hit my 500 and 600 yard gongs a few times for good measure. I am just as amazed as you are that I made these amazing shots!

Hats off to you for practicing at long range, and testing your rifle and loads to greater distance. So you were ready for a shot at those ranges.
