Hello all!

Welcome to AH you will find everything about a safari on here but be warned if you are going to do it once you will return for more

Welcome to the madhouse Standard Velocity, you will find the inmates deeply contaminated by the African bug, mostly contagious, and generally certifiable on account of rifle buying madness. You are in the right place for Safari knowledge and experience sharing :)

S.V.your first trip will be just that, then will be the 2nd,3rd,you get the idea.
welcome.

Hi welcome aboard :D Beers:....anywhere specific as "africa " is quite large....

Africa being big and all I guess I will need some guidance from those who have been around.

It looks like various game are present in different regions which are open or not for hunting subject to the vagaries of the governments who control them. Dangerous game would probably not be on the list for a first safari so a good plains game package would be reasonable. The only DG of interest would be buffalo but they appear to be pricey.

Trophy quality over quantity would always be the goal. I’ve passed on more trophies than I’ve taken for an assortment of reasons (including one monster whitetail that was just too fun to watch). Game management, whether on my property or halfway round the world, is more important than bragging rights.

It would be nice to have an experience that is safe for my better half but adrenaline inducing enough to be memorable. We like comfort but would trade a luxury experience for something unique every time. We’ve found we have more fun interacting with the people who live where we travel. Last time we were in Canada a guy who owned the art gallery invited me to use his moose tag if we could justify another trip.

For the foreseeable future learning about the regions and game is the goal. I’ve read some stories of disappointment on here too, so any advice on pitfalls will help in later decision making. Advice on unreliable outfitters, bad taxidermy, unnecessarily dangerous situations, cultural taboos, etc. will help tremendously.

Thank you all!

Hello Standard Velocity,

Khomas Highland Hunting Safaris of Namibia, welcomes you to the greatest forum on earth.

Regards,
Velo Dog.

Thank you for the warm welcome.

I’ve been hunting the South East for thirty years and want to branch out. Elk in the West and moose in Canada are both kind of expensive. Looks like the entry price for Africa isn’t all that much more (though I feel it can get real pricey real quick).

I’ve a small problem with buying guns but never selling any. Some of them happen to be more Africa-appropriate than whitetail woods-appropriate.

Aspirational gun purchases aside Africa sounds like an experience. We’d like to see the things you can only see there. When we do finally pull the trigger we’ll want to see as much as possible, eat all the food and fill tags as the final (yet not ultimate) goal.

Looking forward to learning enough here to avoid being eaten by a lion.
Welcome aboard SV! I highly recommend you start planning a trip! If you are looking for something more economical I would recommend gambling, a cocaine habit, a couple of ex-wives and a trophy girlfriend because you may be able to stay more fiscally responsible than once you start hunting Africa. You will find yourself doing back alley big bore deals, ordering brass and bullets in huge quantities for rifles you don’t even have but the stuff was on sale. But other than that you won’t find much more rewarding in life!
Cheers,
Cody
