Anti’s and hunters both say there are lots of elephant in Botswana and that there is massive new hunting being offered with the ban ending.

How come I haven’t seen one advert for elephant in Botswana yet? No quota established?

Very interested in this as well. Who are the players already on the ground?

The big outfitters all left when hunting was closed, it will take some time to reopen but I know they are around the table at the moment....remember they have committed in other countries already...

The government will actually have to finalize the process before any hunting is even considered. Would you invest without the rules being in place?

Elephant hunting will be implemented in citizen hunting areas, community areas and concessions based on a quota system. Kitso Mokaila, Minister of Environment, Natural Resources Conservation and Tourism this week told parliament that following the lifting of the hunting ban, his ministry has developed Hunting Guidelines on how hunting will be implemented in the country.

Mokaila was responding to a question from Member of Parliament for Nkange, Edwin Batshu who asked him to update the House on the lifting of the hunting ban and its positive effects in the Nkange Constituency, and to state, how hunting will be managed throughout the country in general terms, how hunting is going to be done in the Nkange Constituency and how such hunting is going to relieve the people in the constituency of the hardships they have suffered over the past three years when elephants drove and continue to drive them away from their ploughing fields, farms and cattle posts; and whether a decision by Government to drive these elephants to Wildlife Management Areas using helicopters has been abandoned; and if so, why?

Mokaila said it is anticipated that the issuance of hunting quotas for elephants will reduce conflict by driving elephants away from conflict hotspot areas. Other measures agreed by government to help reduce conflict include rehabilitation and erection of elephant proof fences in hotspot areas. He said his ministry continues to implement other measures such as the drilling of additional water points for wildlife in protected areas and wildlife management areas to reduce movement of elephants into settlements.

Thanks @BRICKBURN

So it appears like Botswana dangerous game hunting is just like most Leica product announcments: There's plenty of talk, please take a brochure, see us at the convention, we're very excited....but in reality there is nothing for sale.

In IT I think this term is called "Vaporware".

I've heard a dozen people raving about all the hunting opportunities (present tense) in Botswana but I now realize its wishful thinking. Meaning, by the actual time an offer is made, a trip is booked, a hunt is consummated, the importability of the animal may be null and void.

If anyone sees the quotes/offers for any 2020 hunts in Botswana, please post them here so we can track the rumors as they convert into facts and ultimately into legal hunts with firm dates.

Considering the political climate in the U.S., Europe AND Botswana, why would anyone make the investment in a hunting venue? It could be gone in the next election. I'm sorry but Botswana is spinning their wheels if they think anyone but the locals are going to kill elephants or any other game.

Hogpatrol why would you say that Botswana still hunts on private land even with foreign clients and the process that start hunting in full will have to start up again from sratch it doesnt happen overnight.
A lot of people are exited about this but just like there was a long proccess when the hunting of elephant was stopped so it is a long one to start it again.
Botswana is probarly the most stabel country in Africa and I would easily invest there if I could and had the means if and start my painting business over there I would be there in a heartbeat.
Almost no serious viloent crime death penalty still in place and a very stable currency.
Quess what I would do as a local if you don't want to come and hunt elephant ;) ?

What is exactly the difference between "private" and "public" land in Botswana? I know in Zimbabwe there can be communal land that is privately leased, or privately owned land that participates in CAMPFIRE. There can also be privately owned land that is co-administered with National Parks. What scenarios are we talking about in Botswana?

I feel like a few questions could be answered in the Riley's bar in Maun. Who's been on the ground in Botswana recently?

I am working with one of the Botswana operators to market their product. We have quota in one block already and are bidding on others. As soon as we have it finalized we will join AH as a sponsor and advertise it properly and above board. After a lot of wishful thinking and talk it looks like we are finally going to see science and reason prevail.

As I took the last buffalo legally harvested in Botswana, I am toying with the idea of trying to take the first buffalo legally harvested when it reopens. And yes, there is going to be buffalo on quota!

We will have to respectfully disagree Hogpatrol. I expect to see hunters in Bots in 2020 and perhaps even late 2019. There is a lot of interest and things are moving quickly in the ministry.

I too have been in conversation about a return to Botswana. There will be elephant hunting soon. Those with deep pockets who do not care if USFWS makes a positive determination on import permits will be the first in. As soon as they get approved to import, through permitting or the legal process, I suspect you will see a great deal more advertising and open marketing. For now, the conversations between those outfitters obtaining permits, and prospective hunters, are being conducted in tight circles.
