New Guy from Idaho

Welcome to AH community Butch. Glad to have you, and the wife!

Our hunt was July of last year in the Limpopo area of South Africa. Animals taken by my wife Jean were Livingston Eland bull, Gemsbok cow, Blue Wildebeest cow and Common Impala. I took a Black Impala, Common Impala, Blue Wildebeest bull, Blue wildebeest cow and gemsbok cow. We decided to use old traditional calibers. Jean used a Ruger Hawkey African in 275 Rigby shooting 175 gr. Nosler Partitions. I used a Ruger #1 in 303 British shooting 215 gr Woodleigh Weldcore bullets. All shots but one were under 200 yards. Jean's Impala was about 200 yards. Had European Mounts done on the Blue Wildebeest cows. Shoulder mounts on everything else plus back skins on all animals. Sure dressed up our family room. Planning our second hunt in 2021. About the third day of our hunt Jean said she could live here. I felt the same way. Beautiful country! Can't wait to get back. We did alot of walk and stock. For months prior to the hunt we both did a lot of cardio and strength exercises plus learned to shot off of sticks. That was something neither of us had done before. That helped alot.

Welcome aboard Butch. Please tell us a little more about yourself as it relates to hunting. things like what have you hunted previously, what kind and caliber rifles do you own, do you reload. Do you have any near term hunts planned?

Yes I do reload (47 years). Hunted with several calibers 6mm06 Ackley Improved, 30-06 ICL, 30-06 Springfield. Last three years hunted with Ruger #1 in .303 British. Working on loads for a Ruger #1 in 450/400 Nitro Express and a Chapuis X4 in 9.3x74R.

Thank you for your report. I am glad you gave us an update. Which outfitter did you use? How was the service? Thanks

We were the winning bid at an NRA banquet. The outfitter was Authentic African Adventures.

Hi Butch, Great hunt! In Twin Falls and leaving in 2 weeks from tomorrow to hunt the same area with Numzaan. We won our hunt at a DU banquet a year ago and finally get to go.
Any quick tips? Thanks!

I checked out Numzaan's web site. Excellent info given. We pre paid for the game we wanted to take, avoiding the 2.5 to 5 percent fee. Also make sure to contact your financial institution about your upcoming trip and the days you will be using it. Very important! We carried a small amount of cash for tipping. Will you be taking your own firearms? We found that having hard cases with wheels is the only way to go. Make sure to follow the airlines procedure for carrying and amount of ammo you can take. Make sure to declare ammo along with firearms also when you get to the airport. Make sure airlines checks firearms all the way to your final destination. Have a small carry on case to carry any medications you take and make sure their in their original packaging. Also carry copies of all important documents(rifle permits, passport, letter of indemnity etc.) If you haven't shot off of sticks get in some practice doing it. You will need a converter to charge your cell phone or camcorder. Take lots of pictures make for great memories. Travel lite. With daily laundry you don't need to take as much. The worst part of your trip is going to be the flight home. Hope some of this will be of benefit to you. Would love to get together after you get back to compare our experiences. Safe Trip and Good Hunting. Butch.

Ah, thanks a ton for replying Butch.
My wife is a bit reluctant to shoot off the sticks so I'm hoping she can get most shots off prone or off the landscape.
We have an opportunity to pay ahead for the animals and although reluctant, I think we will.
Numzaan has been very good to us to include communication. They have made sure we know exactly what to bring, what to expect and have emailed 3-4x a week keeping us updated on various information.
If you don't mind, I will pm you a quick question.
Thanks again.
