I was looking at the current form 4457 and noticed it will expire on 8/31/2019. I am traveling to Zambia on Safari in October and was wondering if I would have any problems with South Africa(traveling through) or Zambia because of this?

I am in the same boat! will be traveling to SA Nov 1st. I had send this same question to CBP last week and have yet to receive an answer.

Unless you are overnighting in JO it wont be a problem, you wont have to show it. If you are laying over, you might want to give a call to one of the rifle permit outfits and ask them. I suspect it wont matter either way if that is the ONLY form available. Its really stupid to have to even talk about it, makes ZERO sense.

CBP doesn't care, the actual form does not expire.

However South Africa has made a decision that it needs to be stamped in the current year in order for them to accept it. So if you are going November 1 and your 4457 has the stamp with 2019 on it then you are good to go. If you actually want to know if it is going to restrict your entry with a rifle you need to contact the SAP's office in South Africa and ask them.

I would just use a preapproved meet and great service and not even worry about it. While it does cost to use a service it is well worth it.

Agreed with JimB’s response above. I’m leaving for Zim on Sept 21st so had the same question (going thru JoBurg on way to Vic Falls). As long as the CBP officer has stamped your 4457 in 2019 date, you’ll be just fine. Happy hunting!

I went to the Reno Customs Office today with a 8/31/2021 form that I found online on a non-Cusoms website. They said it was not a valid 4457 and I was not allowed to use it. They said they have been looking for a updated form but unable to locate any

If I recall correctly, Henry from Riflepermits said as long as it’s stamp and sign this year, you’re good go for SAPS.

I would recommend only using official forms have have not been photoshopped removing the August date.

Wouldn't it be nice if we could lobby someone in the US Government Printing Office to place a form date of 2030 on it.

That would take care of a lot of us for a long time.

From Henry at Rifle Permits of whom I asked the question:

Dear Sir

You can just delete the expiry date on top, as long as the form is signed in 2019 the SA Police will accept.

Kind regards

Henry Durrheim Director

But the trick is to get your CBP officer to accept the form that you pulled off of the internet.

Mine won't, he will only use the official form that is sent out by the Government.

The 4457 that they gave me does not have an expiration date on the top. Guess it is good for one year.
