Right folks,

The new Bridge at Kazangula got me thinking. You’ve got several months, not many budget constraints and the permits to be with guns and ammo where ever you choose to be… so seems like the excuse for a road trip.

So, you’ve obviously got a Land Cruiser, with decent aircon and plenty of extra Diesel and spare tyres.

You’ve got snacks as you need and a decent enough phone / laptop combo to book camp sights and lodges along the way.

So, where do you go and what battery do you take to be able to take advantage of whatever opportunities there might be?

So, for me, it would be:

.22lr Brno bolt action – because who doesn’t like a little .22lr with subs?

.223 Rem – CZ527 with a 3-12x50 scope and a 62gr soft points. Great for any members of the “Tiny 10”

7x64 – Mausingfield action,165gr soft points, 2.4-16x56 scope and that should cover plains game

.404 Jeffery – FN Commercial action. Should deal with the DG stuff or large PG. 400gr Solids and softs, maybe some of Peregrines 320gr for PG

12 Bore – I’d take my Browning O/U with multi chokes. Take a box of slugs, AAA and No. 4 buck shot, 5s and some No. 3s as goose shot which should cover most things whether Tiny 10, wing shooting or maybe slotting something that is dozy enough to walk past your hide

So, folks, what would you take?

Ruger model 1 in 375 H&H with solids and expanding bullets and since I am keen to put it to use my Merkel 470 NE

So, where do you go and what battery do you take

Must remember that I am on AH and not https://expeditionportal.com. I saw land cruiser, BATTERY, and bridge and went into overland driving adventure in Africa.

So for my firearm battery

Winchester Model 70 .375 H and H with 300gr A-Frames for the small stuff

Winchester Model 70 .416 Rem Mag with 400gr A-Frames for the medium stuff

VC .470 NE with 500gr Woodleighs for anything else

Now, which rooftop tent and do you go with a cooler or an onboard fridge?

and are we talking about this type of truck

Scrummy, are you asking for our opinions on which of the firearms that you own that we would take, or which of our firearms we would take should such an adventure come our way? My selection of arms from your battery would be the 7x64, the 404 Jeffery and the shotgun. That is providing I was limited to two rifles and a shotgun. Now if I were choosing from my battery it would be my 404 Jeffery, a 35 Whelen and my Remington 870 in 12 Ga.

Which ever you like buddy. If you want to suggest what you have, what I’ve got or what you wish you have! It’s all good, it’s your trip! ;)

...my wife and my 375H&H.

As long as that's in the bakkie, everything else will sort it's self out.

Whats all the shit on the back?.......

It's an Oz thing. However it is a Landcruiser with the steering wheel on the "Proper Side";)

That is Romantic!!! :A Banana:

Unfortunately, those types of lines are not included in the romantic novels and chick flicks our wives enjoy.:A Banana Sad:

Good thing my wife is a "5am rusk & cuppa before hitting the bakkie with her own rifle" kinda girl.
Her favorite authors include Ruark, Taylor & Aagaard.
Yes, it's quite romantic...and no, you are not invited.;)

I would go for a double cab bakkie but probably not go for the tent on top and the stuff in the back.

I must admit something with a little more punch for the PG is appealing. I have a 9.3x62 which is not dissimilar to your .35 Whelen but only has a 3 MOA red dot on it.

Ooo ,fun topic ! If l actually HAD these guns , l would take the following :
1) A .375 HH Magnum BRNO ZKK 602 along with A few boxes of 300 Grain Winchester Nosler Solids and a few boxes of Swift A Frames . And a box of Cutting Edge Monolithic meplat solids , 300 grain . This would be my "multi tool " gun . I would use it from everything from Dik Dik to Brain shots on Elephant.
2) A Valmett Over Under combination gun . Upper barrel is a .22 Savage Hi Power rifle barrel. Lower barrel is a 12 gauge (f preferably 3 inch chamber) full choke shotgun barrel. For the rifle barrel , l would take a few boxes of Norma 71 grain soft points. For the shotgun barrel , a few boxes of #1 , #6, AAA and a box of Brenekke super Magnum slugs. I would use this for wing shooting and hares .
3) An 11.2 × 72 mm Schuler custom rifle built on a ZKK-602 action. For this , l would take 401 Grain Woodleigh Round nosed soft points handloaded in Bertham brass cases ( unfortunately , no one makes a solid bullet for this caliber). This would be my Buffalo gun, or hippo gun.
MAYBE l would even use it for an elephant using a body shot ( but generally solids are the only suitable choice for tuskers) through the heart or lungs if l was SUCH a good shot that l knew , l would be hitting no bone.
Of course , l don't have such a battery yet . I don't even know if you CAN build an 11.2 × 72 mm Schuler rifle on a ZKK- 602 action :( . So , if l had to choose from what l have :
1) My .375 HH Magnum Winchester Model 70 with the same choice of bullets as the BRNO ZKK 602. Due to the 3 inch grouping which this rifle produces , l would use it on Lung shots for Buffalo and Elephant and other thick skinned dangerous game.
2) My .350 Rigby Magnum Custom ZKK- 602 rifle . For this , l would take a few boxes of Kynoch 225 grain round nosed full patch bullets and a few boxes of Kynoch 225 grain soft nose spitzers. This would be my plains game rifle for animal up to the size of an Eland and even lions.
3) My BRNO 12 gauge Over Under ( full choke both barrels) . Same shot selection as the one mentioned in my preferred battery.
And IF semi automatic shotguns are legal in Africa and 10 gauge ammo is available :
4) My 10 gauge Browning Gold semi automatic shotgun with Multi chokes. For this , l would take a few boxes of BB , a few Boxes of Federal Cape Shock 10 gauge slugs , a few boxes of #6 and a box or two of buckshot ( even though l doubt
Buckshot would see much use in Africa ).
I did Buy a fairly reasonable priced .375 HH Magnum BRNO ZKK -602 rifle ( made in 1974 ) very recently in excellent condition with the neat little folding peep sight. But it hasn't reached me yet . This will replace the Model 70 Winchester on my list.
Cool topic ,
Hoss
