Just back from Namibia on my first plains game hunt. It was a fantastic trip. Came home with more than I expected. I already booked with the same outfitter for a Croc and Buffalo Hunt next year. I am being told that I may want to get myself a larger caliber than my 375 H&H. I have been looking on the web for double barrels 470 NE. My biggest issue is that I am a lefty and although I have found a few for sale I do not know anything about Manufacturers and pricing. I would love some input on if another caliber is needed and what to or not to look for.

Welcome to AH!

You do not need a larger caliber than .375 for croc and buff.
However, you will find this site is full of encouragers on adding additional rifles to your arsenal haha!

As stated your 375 H&H will do the job, having said that due to eye problems I have start shooting left handed. I’ve got a Merkel 140 in 470 that I used last year to shoot a Elephant. It came with a straight stock so it works for me as is.

Yes your 375H&H can take Buffalo and should be accurate enough for a Croc. But on a Buffalo bigger is better provided you can shoot it well enough. Open sighted double with a scoped 375 as a backup and croc gun would be a great setup for your next hunt. Thus you have the perfect excuse to obtain another rifle as it very obviously is a need, not just a want ;-)

Welcome to AH Howard Postel! Please post your hunt report.

I'm a lefty too, so I can appreciate the frustration of looking for a LH double.

I ended up ordering a chapuis 470 to my specifications, about $12k all in. I chose the wood, the engraving, and they're cutting it to my exact measurements. Takes about 6 months to deliver... I'm expecting mine in September.

Also, there is a LH Blaser S2 for sale in 470 from Marco Polo Outfitters. Also about 12k.

Welcome to AH! Please post a report on your trip. As others have stated, your .375 will certainly get the job done for buff and croc. And I'd prefer it for the croc.

Now if you just want something bigger......well just call me an encourager. A .470 can get it done on anything that walks the earth. I would suggest if you can to find somewhere you could shoot one. The step up from a .375 to a .470 is quite significant in recoil.

Hi Howard, welcome to AH !

Now just be careful with all these guys who are just looking for an excuse to buy a new gun, your .375HH will be fine for your needs, just practice all you can.

Welcome to the forum Howard!
My 375 H&H worked well on both croc and buff although I used different bullets for each. 250 for croc because it gives me 1/2” groups. 300 on buff for the additional penetration.
The 375 H&H has worked for me on everything from duiker to Cape buffalo. Wonderful cartridge for Africa! JMO&E
Good luck in your decision, but me, I’d use the funds needed for a double on another hunt. Again JMO.

Welcome aboard Howard. R.E. posting your hunt, yes it is expected. Why, because we all like sharing (vicariously) the hunting experience you had. Some of the info. you provide might just be the answer to a future hunter's question. On this site we hunters support and help each other as much as possible. The 470NE double is a lot of gun. Shoot one before you buy something that powerful. While hunting DG it is your job to put a capable bullet into an animal at a location that can and should kill it cleanly. Sometimes follow-up shots are necessary, but after that it is up to the PH. Have you asked your outfitter what caliber and bullet he suggests for the animals planned for your next hunt?
