Remington 375HH ammunition

I see a few posts about the Federal Power Shok. What about Remington?

They are 270gr soft point round nose and just a few dollars more than Federal. Personally I've always got better groups out of various Corelokts than Federal blue box, and I've always thought the Rem was one of the stronger cup/core bullets of that design on the market.

Any experience on it's grouping or performance on PG / NA game?

I'm not a fan of cup-and-core style bullets and stick to Swift A-Frame, Barnes TSX and Norma Oryx for my 375H&H.
Of course there are other premium bullets out there, but this is what I have used.

I've said this before but it bears repeating.
We spend thousands of dollars on a Safari trip of a lifetime.
More money on plane tickets, rifles, optics, gear, clothing...etc
And now you want to pinch pennies when it comes to the one and only item that has any contact with a game animal?

When one drop of blood equals trophy fee paid, where are you going to put your money?
I'm sticking with premium bonded/mono-metal expanding bullets.

Concur with @BeeMaa .... for me its premium bullets.. theyre more expensive.. but in the overall scope of things.. the cost difference is minimal.. even if we're talking a DIY elk or bear hunt in the US.. by the time you factor in all the other costs.. the $ difference between premiums and non premiums is pretty small..

That said.. I cant think of an animal in the Western Hemisphere that wouldnt easily be dispatched by a .375 core-lokt projectile..

Most, if not all African PG would easily fall to it as well I am sure..

If they group, either will be fine for North American game. The .375 is frankly overkill for anything except a brown bear or perhaps a mastodon, so a 270 gr cup and core would be fine almost regardless of how it performs. I assume were you booking a guided hunt for brown bear a few extra bucks for a quality bullet wouldn't be an issue (frankly, a standard SP would handle that job 99.9% of the time - though on a 20k investment, I'll gladly buy the extra .01%). But on anything else, a 270 gr round nose soft point is going to plow a pretty substantial hole through a North American game animal.

Federal Power Shok .375 HH 270 gr works just fine on nearly all PG. Maybe not an eland! I used it exclusively on my first Africa hunt. Put the bullet in the right place within the range you are competent at, and don't worry about the rest.

To put it bluntly, Core Lokt, isn't. Deadliest mushroom on the range. I have found the jackets to separate at close range on North American game. My Uncle often says that the ammunition is the cheapest part of the hunt. I tend to believe that. Federal has better donor brass to my reloading pile.

In terms of American Brands , I have shot Federal , Remington and Winchester Nosler Ammunition in my .375 HH Magnum. In terms of European Brands , Kynoch and Norma. I would rank Norma and Winchester the best , followed by Federal. Remington wasn't bad. But l got the best results with the former three

I feel Remington is very good but I just wonder whether they are a bit soft relatively speaking ???

That is my thinking as well. If going after truly large game, I think the premium bullet is certainly worth buying. If shooting 300-400 pound animals, I suspect a soft point would be more than fine. Even if it separates from the core, you have two 130 grain bullets blasting through.

However being new to the cartridge that is a guess. From the comments, it sounds like it would work fine when applied correctly.

As to the Remington SPs, including Core-Lokts--never could figure out exactly what "core-lokt" REALLY meant (other than a "catchy", easy to remember marketing term) as they will come apart like any simple cup and core, frangible type bullet. Even the Remington Core-Lokt Ultra Bonded is a fairly thin jacketed design and will come apart on big game. I guess if you want to put a really big hole (maybe too big) in deer-sized game the 270 gr SP would be OK. For anything the 375 is really designed for... No... use a stronger bullet. In NA for large moose and brown bear type game and even elk use a better, stronger bullet- IMO. For big game hunting, ammo and bullets are not the place to save relatively small amounts of money.

I'll skimp on airfare, clothing, just about anything. BUT, I won't skimp on my weapons or ammo.

Not to say I don't try to negotiate a better deal, or wait for a sale. Or that I would spend $$$$$.00 on a new fancy custom rifle, when I can purchase a good quality, new or used, highly rated factory $$$$.00 rifle that is just as accurate, reliable, feels and handles as good or better.

After all we each have our budgets.

I shot a decent whitetail buck with a 270gr Remington Core-Lokt out of my .375H&H about ten year ago and it separated. Either I was really unlucky or they're not great. I wouldn't trust them personally.

It surprises me the reports of them separating. The bullet isn't traveling that fast and the bullet is heavy. It can't be any worse than a 150gr cup/core from a 7mm Rem Mag; I've had 5 different exit holes from the same bullet before...

I guess it depends if you think an exploding / separating bullet when it hits bone is good or a bad thing if puts game dead right where it stands.

The randomness of the separated bits bothers me. On smaller animals they may all pass though and just destroy rib meat which is no big deal at all, or they may completely demolish the far shoulder. There's a lot of good meat on a shoulder so when a bullet turns the whole thing to jelly it niggles me. I tend to use premium bullets for everything I intend to eat, even if it isn't dangerous. The most expensive bullets generally cost considerably less than the value of meat a cheap bullet can ruin.

I've had it happen with a .308 at 15 yards out of a short barrel. Cores passed through while jackets remained in the animal. Guess they left the core unlokt...
