My dad and I are looking at doing a chamois hunt this next summer and we were wondering if you guys have any experience hunting there or recommendations for guides, locations, etc. This is our first overseas hunt and so we want to make sure we are doing it right!

We have reached out to huntaustria.com and huntinginaustria.com, both of whom are SCI and DSC "rated" or "approved", but I'm curious to see if you all have any other recommendations.

Thanks for the help!

A good idea, holidays in the Austrian mountains.
Many hoteliers in Austria are hunters and offer chamois hunting.
You just have to longe in their houses.
Probably cheaper than your agencies.
But Gams/Chamois, is nowhere a cheap animal.
And this year's winter was a disaster for the game in the mountains.
You can send a mail to the touristinfo of Tirol (like Montana :) ) for example.

The lovely Mrs. Red Leg and I head over next month. I’ll hunt boar and roe deer for three days along the Hungarian border while she pillages the local villages. We’ll then spend ten days playing tourist in Salzburg and Vienna.

Bob Kern and the Hunting Consortium arranged everything in their typically professional manner. Based in Virginia, he and his business are highly respected in the industry. I would strongly urge you to reach out to them as well. They have been organizing European hunts for the better part of three decades. huntingconsortium.com

@Foxi what happened this winter in the mountains?

I am planning long since, to go to Austria for hunt. Never had chance (lack of time) so far.

But if I may suggest, add alpine marmot to the list. Hunting season august, september if I am not mistaken. I mean, for chamois - alpine hunt. Not roe deer, what red leg was speaking about.

Until 7-10 m snow in some regions.
A lot has starved to death.
A lot of victims from avalanches.
Not in your aera.I the northern parts of the Alps.
Hope we see each other in Salzburg.

This global “warming” thing is very confusing. (n)

Sent you a PM.

I can already hear your nightingale trampling (a saying in G) ,but the turbulences are amazing in any case.
On the south side (South Tirol ,Trentino,Italy ) of the Alps was nothing.
Got your message, should work(y)(y) Im happy.

Blessed to hunt Chamois several times on the German side of the border, literally walked ridges dividing Austria from Germany. Number one recommendation is to get your lungs ready. Steep rock slides in oxygen deprived areas. I really enjoyed those hunts and the scenery was incredible. Steep terrain with clouds and fog often below. Good boots with great ankle support are a must. Have fun and let us know how things work out.

but in the mountain-woods its not so dangerous like in the rocks.

Foxi, I concur. I hunted above the tree line and the mountain woods were far below. Those trees might have stopped me if I slipped into a rapid descent.
