Hunting fenced in Buffalo...

This is the strangest sensation... I want to say something so badly and I just don't know what to say:E Sad:
The only one that didn't completely screw the pooch, IS The Pooch!

I do think he tried to bark run away!

And some folks seem to think I'm wasting money on those expensive bullets I like to load.

Even then, give me one of the guns being used. If I wounded the buff then I should be one of the ones facing it, not somebody else.

Like I said, I may be naive in this regard but I couldn’t stand holding a camera and watching this happen while somebody else put themselves in the line of danger for something I’ve done.

I understand and agree where you are coming from completely.

The ph may have determined that the hunter was a danger to all involved in the follow up and made him stay back. In all likelihood, we will never know the reason.

Your not going to tell us that the hunter was using Hornady bolt's are you.

From everything I’ve read here on AH, a hunter must use (by regulation) a larger caliber rifle (.375?) than say my .338wm for DG, BUT they allow crossbows?

What a circus show that was. Stupidity rains.

To clarify:

1. Not my hunt
2. I posted this to debunk the myth that hunting buffalo on a fenced property is not a real hunt.
3. Buffalo are dangerous. Fenced or not.
4. There is no pill for stupidity.

With all due respect the video proves buffalo are dangerous (no shit) but it doesn't prove or disprove that fenced is a real hunt.

If that happened in a 50 acre area I will still say it wasn't a real hunt. And if it was shot over a waterhole from a blind with the crossbow then well, in my book this doesn't prove much either (no idea if it was).

And if there is a pill for stupidity all of those guys took it.

When the tracker dog came running back at the beginning I knew this was going to go wrong.... I think the dog has more brains and/or experience than the other four put together. Sad part is that non-hunters will see this and think we are all that stupid.

I agree, crossbows but yet .375. I get they had to draw the line somewhere
My friend raises black angus cattle and his bulls are almost the same size as a Cape buffalo. Some larger. I would not hesitate or think twice about it with my .340 Weatherby, which l am very comfortable and confident with. Of coarse it would have Barnes bullets loaded in it. :D

Understood and thanks for making the point.

Yes, even though I would use at LEAST my .375 h and h on buffalo, I think your .340 Weatherby or my .338WM with SOLIDS, MAY have the penetration needed for a non bone contact killing shot on a buffalo? Maybe a number of these large bore caliber minimum limits came about way before these and other modern cartridges existed? I do know, a crossbow doesn’t meet MY minimum for an animal that can kill you! I wouldn’t even shoot an elk with one as I don’t want to chase one for miles through the mountains! Been there, done that, wasn’t my lousy shot with a .30-06, let alone a crossbow! Interesting and head scratching video though. Where were the trees to climb up when all hell broke loose? Ha! Ha! Ha!

Huh...... I can honestly say nothing in that explanation improves my assessment of the PH’s management of that follow-up.

It always amuses me that someone who has looked at cattle and never even seen a buffalo in the wild figures out what is adequate to hunt them. I have been around both, and trust me, they are wired somewhat differently than an angus, red or black.

Indisputable proof that cattle are a real hunt. ;)

Well a .30-06 for a 300/400 yard shot on a wounded buff sure clears things up....

But certainly a much better choice than a .243.....

:S Off Topic:

The discussion about whether a .30/06 or a .243 is the best cartridge for 300 yard wounded buffalo shots is one for a different thread . :A Naughty:

Thanks for sharing.

Wow, that explanation from the hunter certainly didn't help any of their causes!!

Like others on here...WTH was going on?? Luckily the young man who got tossed is reportedly ok!
