Cracked stock

I recently picked up a Colt Sauer Grand Alaskan in 375 H&H. Upon inspection and before making an offer I found these two cracks in the stock. The price was right so I bought the rifle. I’m thinking a gunsmith could repair these before they get any worse. I am hoping I am correct. What what do you guys think? Any recommendations on where to send it to have be repairs made (I don’t have anyone local) or any thoughts on the matter at all will be greatly appreciated.

staff@gunstockmaker.com Bill Sporich. Did a old Kimber for me last year. Stock was broken at the wrist as well as a couple cracks similar to yours. Price was reasonable and work was exceptional.

Often the result of the area around the recoil lug letting go first, allowing the action to move aft and start the damage to the pg area. Have you had it apart to inspect inside?
 
I haven’t been inside yet. I got the rifle at such a discount I wanted to buy it before the fella changed his mind. I do intend to look inside the stock tomorrow morning after work. I also know that keeping the stock/action screws tight is key along with removing the wood touching the tang. The wood is not touching around the safety but above the safety on the back half it’s jammed right against the wood which is not good at all.

Please let me know how you make out. I have the same rifle, same caliber with the same cracks. I learned that this particular rifle is known for cracking. As I said, I need to get mine fixed so let me know what you do.
 
Since several owners have the same problem there is obviously a problem with the design. Once fixed, would the installation of cross bolts and pillar bedding be helpful in preventing a reoccurrence?

I’ve wondered about bedding and adding crossbolts myself.

I took it apart today and found some bedding and some repair work. Not sure how sound it is.

The reason for the stock cracking in the first place should also be rectified otherwise repairing the stock only would be pointless.
 
I am not familiar with these rifles other than the name, but it appears to be a design issue. This stock is only being held together with repairs and bedding compound. It may last a long time like that or it may not. Were it mine I would chuck that stock into the trash and start over.
 
I posted about this on another thread a couple of weeks back. My buddy owns a Colt Sauer in .458 Winchester Magnum which also has a cracked stock . He used
Wolfgunworks to get it repaired. But now , he's got another problem on his hands . He's a gun collector and lives (and hunts in ) in Grizzly Bear Country . He acquired a huge stock of A square Monolithic solids in .458 Win Mag and .30-06 . He used those .458 Monolithic solids in his Colt Sauer and now his barrel's burnt out . He is a very keen fire arms enthusiast and actually has a journal recording his shots. The Colt Sauer barrel lasted EXACTLY 571 shots before it was shot out. Either Colt Sauer rifles had really soft barrels or A Square bullets are really hard on barrels.
I would suspect the latter , since His vintage M1 Garand also got it's rifling completely worn through , after 700 rounds , approx.
This a real shame since Colt Sauers are really fine guns with their detachable Magazines and all.
PS : This time after you fix your stock ,crossbolt that sucker and have it bedded with fiberglass.

I am wondering if those monolithics could have expanded the barrel internally.
we hear of this sometimes with regards early monolithics,
with regards the pictures of the cracked stock and modifications, whoever did that needs some re-education.

Cracked stocks, barrels shot out early? To me this looks like a money pit. Too much other good stuff out there to deal with these rifles. You may wind up spending a bunch of money and then have the barrel go south. My 2¢, disclose the defects and send this one down the road but if really enamored by the name and action, put a new barrel and stock on it and shoot.
 
Based on the other posts I think I'd do the following with this rifle:

1) Have a gunsmith check the barrel and action for any issues. If the barrel is a concern, you need to decide if you want to re-barrel.

2) If there is a concern about the action, you need to decide if you also want to bear any cost there.

3) It looks like that stock is being held together about like a '78 Chevy. There'd be no question in my mind but to send that stock into the burn pile. There's just too many cracks and glob and whatnot for me to trust the stock to hold up. This is a dangerous game caliber rifle. Do you really want to pull down on something big and foul tempered knowing what you know about this stock now and "fixing" it some more?
