I finally took it out to the range the other day for some sight in shots at 25 yards. Once I got on target my first group was 1 1/4 inch center to center for five rounds off the bench. My next 3 round group came in at 3/4 inch center to center with two touching and the third round about 1/4 inch right. I shot these off sand bags on the bench. Load is Hornady brass, Win LR primer, Barnes 175gr TSX and 47.5 grains of 4064. MV of about 2630fps. 25 yards is not much of a test but I sight all my rifles in at 25 first time out to shake them out. Next time it will be 100 yards now that I know what it can do. I go 2 to 3 inches high at 100 for final setting.

I loaded up some 150gr Nosler BTs and will see what they do at 100. These are some bulk packs from Midway. It doesn't tell what they are so I went on line to different manufactures until I found one that matches. Nosler green ballistic tip boattail.

Rifle handles beautifully. I did have a problem with it not picking up a round from the magazine occasionally but it smoothed out after a few rounds and ran fine. I think it was just a little tight and needed some working to loosen up. Action is tight and needs rounds downrange to limber up. It throws brass straight to the right for about 6 feet or more on ejection.

As soon as I can corral my daughter, I'll have her help me post some pix. I have 3 years of trophy pix to post, too.

I would love to see the trophy photos! And photos of camps too!

What glass did you top your rifle with?

I put a Leupold VXR Patrol 4 - 12 x 40 illuminated reticle on it. I have some VXR 3-9 x 40 illuminated on some of my other rifles and I like them. For an affordable scope in my price range they are my first choice.

I love the 30-06! I have used it on jackrabbits practicing for big game season, coyotes, bobcats, turkeys, grouse, antelope, white tail and mule deer, elk, black bear, and maybe something else I cannot remember. Loads started with 100 gr Speer Plinker and 110 FMJ to 200 gr Swifts and Nosler Partitions.
My current favorite is the Barnes TTSX 150 gr. Probably the most versatile load I have.

Enjoy your new MRC. I found mine in 375 H&H only improved after a lot of use. I also found that the Barnes bullets get more accurate with a pretty dirty barrel.

Newboomer, try some old fashioned Hornady 180 Gr. Round Nosed bullets in your '06. Their accuracy may surprise you. Because of the shape there is a lot of body in contact with the rifling. My hunting shots are under 200 yds. so the lack of ballistic coefficient is of little to no concern.

By the time you get 100 rounds down the barrel you will know exactly what it’s going to do!

Flat Based Bullets for 300 yards or less. Boat tails after 300 yards.

Some gun scribe wrote that and I thought, huh. I wonder why? A little thought said the bullet bearing length is longer than on a boat tail. A little more contact with the rifling couldn't hurt I figured.

I tried it...damned if it didn't work out that way in a couple of my rifles. If you aren't sure, try running a box of Sierra Pro-Hunters down the tube...It was a huge win for me.

I've got a bunch of odds and ends of 06 stuff. I'll have to experiment with some of it and see how it compares with my various handloads.

Newboomer, at what ranges do you do the majority of your hunting?

My closest shot was my buf at about 30 yds and my longest was 286 for a springbok. Most are between 80 and 150.

Jack O’Conner said if your 30-06 won’t shoot a 165 with 57g of IMR 4350 it won’t shoot anything. I think by shoot he ment acceptable hunting hunting accuracy, 2 inches or so.
I’ve never tried it although IMR 4350 is the only powder I use in my 30-06 mostly behind 180s but some 150s and 220s also. It has always given me 1.5 groups at 100 yards out of my pre 64 Winchester.

Yep, 57.0 IMR & H4350 behind a 165gr Sierra GK in every 30-06 I've tried shot under 1 MOA.
Ive taken numerous deer, antelope and elk using it.
