Ever wonder why we dont hear much about Zambia here???

A few remembrances for those who have been there and a glimpse for whose who haven't :)

Baboons, big croc and eles on the Luangwa near Chanjuzi. Don't fall into the river!

Building a vehicle bridge, sans power tools, across a slough between Chanjuzi and Fly Camp.

Massive baobab in Nyaminga.

Stuck at crossing northwest of Chipata.

Croc cage at Chanjuzi built after croc grabbed Felix. (Felix survived and had a huge smile every time I ran into him around camp)

Lioness in the long grass (with young a couple hundred yards away)- look out/keep distance! and the same true for a rank and extremely dangerous old cow ele named Charlene.... in that same general area!

Great post, Thank you.

Who could forget a visit to Peter Hankin's grave-site. To me, that is the most iconic "visitation" spot every Safari hunter needs to visit.

I have a picture someplace.

Here's the photo of Peter Hankins Gravesite. It's in the Chanjuzi GMA. For those that aren't familiar, Peter Hankin was the PH that was killed and consumed within morbid earshot of the horrified clients on a photo-Safari he was guiding. This iconic event was chapter one (IIRC) in "Death in the Long Grass"

An iconic event in the formative years of Safari Hunting. This special place has a powerful feel to it.

Benin has free range roan which is pretty reasonable. If memory serves (and it can fail!) I paid a trophy fee of about 1500 Euros two or three years ago. Day rates were about $12,900 for a 12 day safari, so all in less than $15K for the whole thing. If that still sounds expensive, don't forget I added a lot more animals - to name just two - the buffalo (western savannah) cost $1000 and the hippo $2675. As you keep adding animals, it just keeps getting better . . .

This is not to say anything negative about Zamiba - I hope to hunt there one day soon, and see if @spike.t is really as much as a curmudgeon as I am. My guess is that as you add animals in Zambia, the overall cost becomes much more comparable . . .
Good point

steve ahrenberg-
Ah ha- you indeed were there! I was in Abie duPlooy's overloaded cruiser with Abie at the wheel... and survived the trip!! We left Lusaka about 4 AM- it was pitch black. We almost head-on'd a broken down truck in the left lane on the black top maybe 10 miles outside Lusaka. Then nearly wiped out a bicycle running with no lights and no reflectors loaded with charcoal on that same more or less straight stretch of road, were on two wheels more than once on the switch backs leading down to the upper bridge crossing then got stuck in a river crossing on a two track, "short cut" road in the cane fields a ways inland after turning northwest from the Malawi border crossing near Chipata. Didn't break a spring- only a front shock bracket. Looking back on that whole trip- wouldn't trade it for the world! :)

This picture of my Kafue Lechwe was taken by Abie. Look at the horizon...flat. Its almost as though you can see the curvature of the earth it's so flat.

Was read some of the posts here in regards to Zambia, and for sure if you want a full bag +/- 15 animals on a budget daily rate safari you should not consider this part of the continent, but there is like someone writing "a priceless part" to be in a remote area like Luangwa valley that put memorable impressions for the rest of your life !
