I have been trying to locate information on whether I could stay the night in New York with my rifle. I have read that New York has a 24 hour rule that allows you to be there for 24 hours without the need for a permit, but I am having trouble locating anything definitive. I have flown through JFK with rifles this year with no issues at all except for it taking about an extra hour of time. Next year my buddy bought a flight from Johanesburg to New York on Ethiopian air and then he will buy a second ticket from New York to Utah. However, his flight lands in New York at 8pm and there are no flights that leave that night to get him home to Utah. So he will have to stay the night and catch an early flight home. He was planning on taking his own rifle, but neither of us are certain what is permissible in New York. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Shouldn't be any problem...Last November I flew from Dallas to JFK, spent the night and then caught a SAA flight to Johannesburg the next morning. Rifles went with me to the hotel and then checked back in the next morning...no issues at all.

Thank you for the quick reply. That is good to hear. Hopefully my buddy will have the same experience next year.

If he's a foreign national, I'd check and see if that's going to be an issue.

If he is a foreign national trying to bring a gun into the U.S., this is completely different than an American going to S.. A.. with a gun. Check it out in great detail for the possibility of his rifle being confiscated by U.S. Customs if he doesn't have an export permit from S.A. and an import permit from the U.S. through a FFL that import/exports such as Griffin and Howe. The gun cannot be transported by him. If I am wrong let me know. This situation is not related to him arriving into New York.

He's just a normal American that will be in New York with a rifle overnight. He and I both traveled to South Africa with rifles last year with no issues, but we didn't spend the night in New York. It's the New York prob of his trip that concerns us. Looking at New York City Administrative Code 10-305, it appears that there is a 24 hour exception for non residents to carry a rifle there. It seems as though he will be fine.
