Trophy Hunting: Killing Or Conservation?

I have started asking this question when people who don't hunt and are against hunting ask me why I feel the need to kill an animal.
"A 100 years ago would you have had the same ideas about hunting as you do now?"
It has been interesting to watch people sit back and look into the distance as they ponder that question. The question creates a great deal of doubt in their beliefs.
Note: Only do this when you are having a reasonable discussion with someone. The question has no effect on someone that is screaming at you.

Well, what I have found with the three people that I have tried that question on is that it takes them off what they perceive as their moral high ground. All three of these people are not aggressive anti-hunters they just don't see the need for hunting wild animals when there is perfectly good livestock. When they acknowledged that 100 years ago they might have had a different view of hunting they mentally open up to hear the story of the North American Model of Wildlife Conservation. At the end of the conversation I did not convert them to being hunters but they better understood my role in conservation of wildlife.
I think we have to continue to rephrase our ideas. That means you keep saying the same idea but differently. People get to the same spot just by different routes. My question is just a new route for me to get to the same spot. There are some people I know it won't work on. I have to come up with a different route for them. I thought I would share this idea.
