After reading the various threads on various cartridge choices I have a choice for today. This is a subjective choice valid only for today as it may change tomorrow. But my three choices for today are 257 Roberts, 338 Win, 404 Jeffery. There are limitations to these cartridges that are addressed by other cartridges, but at the expense of other limitations. These three are picked with the premise that there are no shots over 300 yards and any shots on DG would include a PF with a stopper (if needed). I know this choice leaves out some really good cartridges such as the 270, 7 & 300 mags, 458 and several metrics; so as I said, these three are my choices for today. Ask me tomorrow or the next day and you may get a different answer. In fact, as I think about it, it's more than likely that you would get a different answer, particularly if I go fondle the Biesen 270 or the Donnelly 458.....

I think we are all on the same page as far as the shifting sands of preference from day to day so on that premise I would advocate for my current three in the 6.5x57, the 9.3x62 and the evergreen 404 Jeffery within the same parremeters as

Things do change but the three rounds you have chosen are great choices.
The .257 Roberts is the .243 with punch. Stick some 115-120 gr Barnes, Nosler or Swift’s in it and there isn’t anything up to 300# where it isn’t an excellent choice and has the capability of doing bigger critters. I have a Kimber in this round and find myself favoring it more and more.
The .338 Win mag, or any .338 mag, is my go to for game 500# or more. It just gets it done. 225 gr Barnes or Swift, or 250 Swift or Nosler Partition.
I don’t have experience with the .404, but it is a classic that has done it all. Hopefully, someday I’ll get one and go chase buff with it.
Next week you may be a 6.5x55, .35 Whelen and .378 Wby guy. But that part of the “fun” of this sport.

If you had asked me a few years ago, I certainly would have included a 300WSM but not anymore.
300WM, 375H&H and a 450/400 Double Rifle.

6.5 Creedmore, 30-06, 375HH.

Today I would go with the 222 Rem, 338WM and 470NE. Tomorrow might be a 220 Swift day though!

6.5 Creedmoor, 338 Win Mag and unsure, but probably 375 H&H.

7 mag, .375 H&H and the .50 cal Knight ultralight muzzleloader. The last of the three gets carried in December when all bugs have long died and it is a full 100 degrees colder than today.

Three is very hard for me to do. I like rifles and many cartridges. But,
338 Winchester, 375 Ruger, and 416 Ruger.

7mm-08, 338-06, 375 H&H...because I have all three in my stable.

Triple deuce, 30-06 and 375 H&H. I’d also like a double of some sort 450/400 or so.
Gizmo was generous enough to let me shoot his 9.3x74 and it was a hoot! Alas, I don’t really have a use for a SxS.

I like your restrictions (for Africa) of 300 yards and a PH backing you up on DG. .300 WM and a .416 is all I would need.

Woke up today and the wind is blowing a bit more, going to swap the 222 out for a 6mm Remington!

With sma game on the menue I might have to add in the 22 VarTarg with the 6.5x57 (or Grendel-Max) and the 9.3x62 as heavy DG is off the table for me
