Hi , if any one here owns a copy of " African Rifles and Cartridges " , could you please provide some information on what Pondoro said about the following calibers :
A ) .333 Jeffery
B) .350 Rigby Magnum
I am interested particularly if he ever mentions taking any elephants with these calibers ?
If you could post the pages here too , l would be grateful.
Appreciate it
Hoss

I remember that he reported great penetration with the.333 Jeffery due to the long bullet /caliber.

I am not at home, working.
If you have patience, or unless someone else does, I can provide requested info in two weeks from now.

I know practicality nothing nothing about these two calibers. I have found almost no records of any known hunter using them on Elephant. For the .333 Jeffery , l only only got one vague reference of Alfred Sharpe using one to dispatch an unspecified number of bull elephant on his last trip in his book " Backbone of Africa " . He never mentions how easy or difficult it was .
For the .350 Rigby , the only reference l can find is Jack Judd , son of William Judd who used a .350 Rigby and a side brain shot to take down the bull elephant which killed his father , Bill Judd . But the elephant was already weakened by 4 shots from a .577 NE and 2 body shots from the .350 Rigby.
So l am very intrigued

Further more, apart from John P. taylor book, I can check also in my library, what Terry Wieland (Dangerous game rifles) and Craig Boddington (safari rifles II) have noted in their books of these respective calibers.

When it comes to books and authors, John Pondoro Taylor is probably most quoted one on subject of rifles, carttridges and calibers, but keep in mind that modern powders and bullets are definitively better and different then those available in Pondoro's time.

So, I will revert in two weeks time, with all above mentioned references (taylor, Boddington, Wieland).

I just took pictures of 7 pages on the 350 Rigby. Man, Taylor loved that 350 Rigby.

I have to run to dinner. Will email the photos to myself, get them on the 'puter and post them up - unless someone beats me to it.

Not sure if it will be tonight...got too many irons in the fire.

john taylor would probably not have preferred the 350 rigby magnum on elephant.
he did not like the lighter bullet compared to the original 400/350 rigby, 310gn vs 225 gn.
in those days, the only way to get good penetration was to use a longer bullet, unlike today.
with regard the 350 magnum, consider a 35 whelen with a 225 gn bullet, as the ballistics are not dissimilar.
bruce.

Taylor says he shot 11 elephants with 11 shots with the .333 Jeffery. But he states "those remarks must not be taken as a recommendation of the .333 as an elephant rifle"

Taylor doesn't mention shooting elephant with the 350 Magnum but does mention another hunter shot a few elephant then got injured when a cow elephant charged him and the 225gr projectile was able to turn her when fired upwards at the underside of her face.

Here are the basics. It sounds like Tarbe will have more info for you. Taylor relates an anecdote about “two young fellas” who went after their first elephant with a .333 and a .318. It didn’t end well for them.
