Many on here know me from before and I have been flying under the radar for a while here on AH mainly because I have taken up training HPR dogs almost full time and I have very little time for anything but my 2 year old daughter, family commitments, training dogs and hunting over them, work also fits in there somewhere.
I may have missed it, but there seems to be no bird hunting section here on AH? Any other obsessive folks who hunt over their dogs on AH? Seems that bird hunting is coming on strong in SA too.
Currently I own 2 GSP's, mother and daughter and we have hunted Pheasant, Partridge, Ptarmigan, Snipe, Capricalle and Grouse on point with them. Then there is Geese, Ducks etc we retrieve and some days we shoot duck on point too.

It's a pretty big thing in my part of the world, as much for deer as birds. My gsp us a decent hunter, just not enough deer around my area
We have many folks that enjoy working their GSP's on hooves game, little fast for our smaller deer species in my opinion.
Mine have been trained not to chase, but they point fox, hare and deer too, makes for some exciting moments.

Some days you shoot ducks on point too?

How does that work exactly?

We basically hunt along the river or lake edge where you have good cover for the ducks, dog locks up on point when they scent the ducks in the reeds, we walk up, give the flush command and the dog puts them up in air. I know in the US it is not common for pointing dogs to flush on command, we have that as a trails requirement.

Me and my family, customers and close friends chase the quails and pheasants here in NTEX. And use Pointers and GSPs. From the 70s to mid 90s quail populations were fairly steady year in and out with few lame years. But last ten years we’ve seen heavier fluctuations. But we still keep our dogs and hunt regardless. We owe it to the hounds. Wives and girlfriends don’t understand for some reason? I don’t get it...

I have been very fortunate, my wife swings a shotgun just as eagerly as I do. This was a Ptarmigan hunt high up on the mountain, no roads just a hard hike.

I hunt the USA and Canada with my English setters - from Saskatchewan to the Mexican border. It is my main preoccupation these days.

I am new here, but love hunting upland birds as much as the job allows (and weather the past few years). I am currently looking at getting a new puppy, likely another field trial American Britt, a Pudelppinter, or perhaps a GSP. Ttundra, not sure where youre located in Illinois, but I am always game to hunt upland birds if the chance presents itself.

You may want to check out the APLA association. American pointing Labrador assoc. My son and I own a great lab that also points and hunts upland and is a 4x grand master. We also host a field/water trial at our place every fall for the dogs to test in. Usually about 25 to 40 dogs. Lots of fun and a good organization

My 13 1/2 year old GSP and I have hunted from Havre, Montana to Gizmo’s RockinG-Ranch near Turkey, Texas. New Mexico, Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, and Wyoming have also been hunted by us.
Unfortunately, we are both getting “long in the tooth”.
Rosco, my GSP, has learned on pheasants to squat down, hold until I get 20-15 yards away, then back out and move to the opposite side to block them from running. I’ve never seen another dog do this, but I heard of a bitch GSP that did. Unfortunately I had already cut him.

Here is a link to my short hunt at Gizmo’s:
