Hello,

I need your help !

Usually I wear a cap during my african hunts (and other outdoor activites) but I look for better protection for the sun.

Please what are your advices for a hat ?

I find this one Tilley LTM6 AIRFLO but it is just a exemple : https://www.tilley.com/uk_en/ltm6-airflo-hat.html color Olive.

Thank you for your replies.

The 5.11 boonie in TDU has worked on my Africa trips. Stuffs into a pocket. Neck strap in case it blows off while riding in the bakkie. Shades my neck, face and ears, but doesn’t stick out too far. I can actually roll it up to use as a rest if needed. And reasonably priced IMO.

Take a look at shelta hats. I like the seahawk. They have incorporated a hard brim in a boonie style hat. I can run my boat at 30 knots and the brim doesn’t flop and the hat stays on.

I have the Tilley and have been exceedingly happy with it, not just for hunting but just about any wear.

I like Filson Shelter Cloth Trail Hats. Used for 25 years from South America to the South Pacific & New Zealand. I've had several cases of Melanoma so need all of the protection I can get and these Filsons do the job.

As mentioned above, I have a Shelta Seahawk I really like. I also have a Tilley Wanderer. The jury is out on which is the better hat so they are both going to Africa this year. The Shelta is far and away the best hat I have seen for water sports.

Thank you very much to share your experiments.

rnovi do you use the LTM6 AIRFLO model ?

Sure do. I have had a sand colored one it for four years now with near daily wear (*1 hour walk each day) and will be buying an Olive Green this weekend. Tilley nailed the design.

How can I help?

Ordered my second Tilley today.

I've hunted with my Akubra for over 30yrs now - it's battered, stained and pretty well roughed up from it's travels - but it fits like a glove and still does the trick. Didn't cost me a cent, either, as it was a hand-me-down from my brother!

I couple of round of melanoma for me also, one of them was far more serious than I ever want to experience again. Filson bush and packer hats for me also.

"Melanoma " it is for that I look for a hat

I did not know Filson but that catches my attention.

Ordered my second Tilley today.
Shootist : What model do you use please ?

About the size, I read it's better to book one or two size bigger for confort and aeration. What do you think of that please ?

Gue'

This is one of those things that doesn't exactly make sense. You have to try one on. I'm a solid 7 1/8" hat by any measurement. My Tilley is a 7 1/4 and my Stetson is a 7.

There's enough production variance in cloth and fabrics to make hat fitment a real thing.

I bought mine at REI. People said "hey! great hat!" I replied, yeah, helps keep the sun out of my eyes when hunting."

Worth.

Every.

Penny.

I have a Tilley LTM6.
Pro:
Well designed
Especially like the twin chin/back of head strap design. Only use the rear strap and has not blown off.
Collapsible which really helps when traveling by air.
Con:
I don't like the synthetic material. On a warm day I still end up with a sweaty forehead.
Doesn't provide much protection from heavy rain or cold.
On very hot days you can still feel the sun burning through the thin fabric.

I frequently use my old KFF (hat Khaki Fur Felt). Great hat
Pro:
After 30 plus years it still fits perfectly.
Great protection against intense sun, rain and cold.
Con:
Not collapsible. If traveling you need to carry it.
Leather internal hat band doesn't breath. Can build up sweat on hot days.
Is hotter on warm days, but blocks out intense sun due to thickness of the material.

I have been thinking about getting a Tilley Hikers Hat T4MO1. Old fashioned cotton construction should absorb sweat.

I have the LTM5 in Olive, which is pretty dark.

The one I just ordered is the LTM6, with the standard (larger) brim. It will be the khaki, which has a bit of a light green tint, but much lighter overall. I happened to see this version in a friend's truck and think it will do a better job overall for Sun protection.

For sizing. I followed the instructions using my wife's fabric tape measure. I then went to the next size larger ( up 1/8"). That worked well for me and am doing same with the current order.

I'm at the range today with the
LTM5. No issues shooting from bench or sticks.

Guessing I may need to turn up the brim a little with the 1" larger brim on the LTM6.

another great advantage of the Tilley is that they are very washable. I have no problem with the sweat since it ends up in the wash pretty regularly. Keeps the hat looking good, eliminates the sweat rings, etc.

For what it's worth, I find I sweat in pretty much any hat. The advantage of the Tilley is that it wicks the sweat so it doesn't get in my eyes.

+1 for boonie hats. Inexpensive, lightweight, washable and available in lots of colors/camo patterns.
