DEER RIFLES IN AFRICA

I think BARTFRNCS thinks you will need a canon to kill PGs. And because of that is he convinced that you will need pay trophy fees for lots of wounded animals when you use a rat gun like the 7-08:)
I guess he must have had lots of bad experience with rat guns himself and payed trophy fees for wounded PGs never to be found again, so either he is a crap shooter or use crap bullets or maybe both ;):stirring::eyebrow:

I am sure you and your son will do well with the 7-08 Savage Hunter :)
When in July are you coming to Marius?
I am staying there till July 10 and my last day of hunting will be July 9.
Maybe we will meet? :)
I will try to leave some decent trophies for you ;)

norwegianwoods you explained that well to Savage Hunter! i thought i was the only one who found the crap stirring smiley! and Savage Hunter have a good hunt, your rifles and calibres will work fine.

we arrive there on July 22.

i guess I missed the point of the 7-08 being such a lousy rifle being the cause of racking up fees. I suppose when I reveal both rifles are made by Savage, it'll really look hopeless?

Last night I dreamed about the hunt. In it, On the first morning I killed 1 animal but wasn't feeling well so matt and Marius hunted rest of day without me. They came back to camp and told me that he had shot 6 animals the first day, including lechwe, giraffe, etc and my trophy fee so far was over $9,000.00 after only 1 day hunting.

I guess I took his reply too seriously. lol.

I agree as the trophy fees will be substantial after a very successful safari.

Good luck and have fun!

That pretty much sums up my feelings too!

Well if you are only going to stick to small bores then enjoy your self imposed limitations. Never thought this topic would stir up such emotion. I know that I'll keep useing my magnums 375H&H's and 450 rigbys and get more shot oppertunities and DRT performance.

The big guns are in a minority, thats all.
Most folks have been hugging their "Ungulate rifles" for a long time Bart, of course they love them.

Just so I understand most of you would shoot a Zebra from marginal angles with brush in the way with the minimum caliber that you shoot wt with?????

I would not shoot a Zebra (or any other big game animal) at a marginal angle or with brush in the way with any caliber. As for the minimum caliber that I shoot whitetails with, I've made one shot kills on whitetails with a variety of calibers from the .22 LR (legal in Montana) to my 7 mm Rem mag and .30-06. I wouldn't consider using a .22 LR or some of the other smaller cartridges that I've killed whitetails with for African Plains Game, but many other cartridges like the 7 mm Rem mag and .30-06 are both great whitetail and plains game cartridges.

CLing dearly to what you know. I myself will always shoot the so called heavy hitters.
Bart

We need to re name this site to deer hunters dreaming of Africa.

I read a great article that debunked the myth of increasingly heavier caliber rifles for increasingly larger African game. I don't remember the exact comparisons but the premise of the article was that if a rifle x, say a Winchester 30-06 was considered acceptable for Gazelle, and then by increasing rifle/ammunition (specifically terminal velocity and energy) proportionately with the increase in animal size, you would be forced to hunt elephant with a 40mm anti-aircraft gun firing exploding shells.
Obviously there is no rule which is hard and fast. There have been too many characters throughout African hunting history who took on the largest of game with rounds that many consider inadequate for Elk. This argument brings to mind an old Far Side cartoon, two cavemen standing next to a dead mammoth, the mammoth has a unusually small arrow sticking out of its toe. One caveman says to the other, "We need to remember that spot!".

As alaways bullet placement is key.
