Shell Holder Belt Placement

Separate belt. I carry Ammo slide, knife, accessory pouch and water bottle on it. I like to stay hydrated with frequent small drinks. This arrangement works better than a bottle in the trackers pack for me. Also, I’ve had times where a quick walk to check something out turned into a half day trek and I was the only one who had grabbed water because it was on my belt.

I use this belt and pouch for 375 h&h.

Frank - I saw the picture of your belt and knife and it reminded me of something.
On the knife lanyard hole, I have a lanyard that attaches the knife to the belt to prevent it from popping out of the sheath inadvertently.
I'm hunting, not prepping for a zombie apocalypse so deployment speed is not a big deal.
Of course this works best with a separate belt, but to each their own.

If I think I need extra rounds loaded pronto, there are two shells inbetween my left hand fingers. Now you probably don't want to do that on any stock you don't want some small scratches in, but it's by far the quickest way for me to reload. Some rifle forearms are probably too thick to hold comfortably if you have small hands though.

I will walk around with shells between my fingers all day.

Not belt related, but just something to add to the conversation

I like others like it on a separate belt so you can take off while resting or before after the hunt. For on the drive to the hunting grounds.

I had this custom made up for my first trip to Zim in Sept. I liked the looks of ones I seen online but price and timeline to hunt I ended up finding a local leatherman instead

Inside the pouch fits 5 - 375hh and exposed fit another 2 for quick access. The leather flap can be flipped into your belt too for access. It worked for me.

I have both a belt and slides. I like the slides mounted on my right side on my pants belt. It is conveniently located and quick to access. I used my cartridge belt at FTW one year in a class. I had both 7RM and 375HH on it and forgot to remove some of the 7s when we went to big bores. 7s don't fit into a 375 very well. No problem but it was a bit embarrassing. My slide holds 5 375s or 7RMs. I used my belt on my first hunt and found I didn't need 11 rounds hanging off me. 4 in my rifle and 5 in the slide gives me enough. We are usually close enough to the truck so I can get more if needed.

This is from Els & Co. Fine Leather. I own several of their items and have ordered mine from African Sporting Creations. You should go to ASC website, wonderful company to do business with.

FTW is a nice place and better country. Seeing that place is how my wife convinced me to move to Texas.

For those of you that wear a shell holder when hunting DG, do you prefer to wear it on your primary belt - ie the belt that holds up your pants that is in the belt loops? Or on a secondary belt that is loop free and just around your midsection area?
Regular belt. For DG softy on right solids on left. Works for me.
Dick Murray Custom Leather is what i use.

That, is dead sexy. It really, really is.

Here's my version.

I took a Marmot fanny pack, cut an Uncle Mikes belt slide in two and asked my Wife to attach them to the sides of the pack.

One in the chamber, one in my pocket...eight on the belt. Small set of Bino's in the pouch, small knife on the slide.

That worked great...until I realized (honestly) I just needed one round in each pocket (no jingles, six pockets) and my binoculars off the left hip. And a super small Swiss Army Knife...with Tweezers.

I've found that going as light as possible in the field with a guide in Africa is the right answer. The guide or tracker carries the pack. At best, I shove a bottle of water in my hip pocket and we roll. In all fairness, I've never been more than 2 miles from the truck in Africa.

Now, Alaska for Goat or Bear? Yeah, that's a different game.

Seems I am bucking the trend. I prefer using my shorts belt. The belt loops keep the belt from riding up and keep everything in exactly the same place that I put them. This is probably because I am a bit of a control freak. Only ammo and my trousers on my belt, no extras. I carry a small backpack with water bottle/leatherman/sheath knife/first aid kit/sunscreen/jacket etc. I do a lot of school trips with 10-18 years olds so I carry more than I would if it were just me ! My brother uses a seperate belt but carries a radio/knife on his culling belt (canvas with about 30 rounds capacity) Mine is leather,10 rounds. I carry on an empty chamber and can empty the magazine into the backpack if needed, my belt stays full. My brother has some space on his belt for unloading the magazine cos he has space for 30 rounds. That is something else to think about when discussing ammo pouches, you should be unloading rifles in vehicles and you need to put that ammo somewhere and then find it again to reload tommorrow.

You will not be doing any of that when hunting with me I can assure you!!

Sorry- not what I meant to say !Unload before getting in the vehicle and loading when you get out. Muzzle always pointed in a safe direction.

Well...my rifle is a single shot soooo, that round just goes into a pocket. :)

This discussion got me thinking. I use my trouser/short belt because I want the belt and cartridge holder held down as I lift out new cartridges. So I went home and tried a loose belt. Unless you have a banch of things attached to the belt, I find it lifts with the cartridge and twists so you are slowed down. Each person has their system, just ensure you practice, practice practice 'til you get it right
