Scatterbrained before safari...

Very easy. Sell all your rifles but 2. One Big Bore and one Medium Bore. Then no decision! Please PM me with rifles for sale and don't tell Cody!

I was getting ready to virtual slap you! Then I realized it was just a joke. :)

449 days out. :(

Serious PRS shooters can do 600 yds from prone as well as most of us can do 300 from the bench.

I’m definitely not a PRS shooter but I did go to a PRS school last year as a guest of Swarovski/Kahles and it was a great way to learn a few new tricks.
If I shoot over 300yds at game it’s only in the prone position with a bipod. If I can’t make that setup work, I just stay off the trigger and keep my boots moving.

Long range and close range sounds like a fun mix, especially mixing modern precision rifles with good old lever actions! Fun! Good luck!

@jasonv enjoy the hunt! How do you like the berger VLDs? I have been shooting the 180 grain VLD in my 7 mag, they shoot really well.

And, What magazine will you be writing for?

I’m the PR director for Sporting Classics Magazine. I’m not much of a writer compared to our regulars but I will be writing this one.

I love the Berger VLD. That being said, it’s not very forgiving. If you put a round into an animal’s engine block, the bullet performs better than anything I’ve ever used. If you put your shot too far back you’re in trouble simply because you won’t have much of a blood trail...if you have a trail at all.

That 195gr in the 7Mag is awesome too. The BC on that bullet is insane.

I read Sporting Classics cover to cover! Great magazine. I’m looking forward to reading what you write.

.755 BC for a 7 mag is awesome! I might have to test that next.

The adventure of a hunt is more interesting than the kill. Kinda like the creation of a superhero is more interesting than the sequel.

We’re in that last three week push before our next S. Africa hunt and we’re worthless at focusing on anything other than the trip. John Hill and I are taking Justin Holt with us to document the hunt as our photographer. Justin is professional photographer for some of the big names in the US firearms industry so I’m really looking forward to seeing his work. We have 3 rifle companies we’re featuring in this project for the magazine:

CZ550 Safari Magnum .458 Lott- currently at American Hunting Rifles getting cut down and slicked up. We’ll be using the two rifles they sent us on our cape buffalo hunt.

Henry 45-70 Case Colored- Henry sent us a few rifles to brush hunt with. I’m sure we’ll use them for wildebeest, warthogs and impala...maybe a few others. I’m using iron sights with mine and I’m really looking forward to hunting with it. Lever guns with irons are just fun to hunt with.

McWhorter Custom Rifles- We’re hunting in an area I’ve hunted before and the Kudu can really push you into shooting long range. They just disappear into the mountains. I shot my last in this spot at 629yds and the McWhorter is even more accurate than my Jarrett I used on the last hunt. For the record, I understand shooting at such a distance may not appeal to the safari purists but long range shooting is a passion of mine and I practice...a lot.

I’ll make sure to post updates and photos from the field. For now, here’s a photo of the Cape Eland I took on this property during our last hunt there.

Y’all have fun! I’ve got a month till departure and no I can’t concentrate either!

Jasonv, as long as you are doing your long range hunting "old school" and not using a camera through your scope connected to a computer or smart phone etc. you have my total support and blessing. Have you ever read any of Nathan Foster's books on long range hunting?

No, just a few McWhorter rifles, long range optics and a Sig Kilo rangefinder.

I haven’t read any of his books but will certainly look him up.

5 days out until we take off...we all know how these last few days speed by.
I did get my CZ 458 Lott back from American Hunting Rifles this week and the work exceeded my expectations. I had a quick range session to confirm the POI of the new iron sights at 50yds and they were dead on. I have a Zeiss 1-4 in Talley steel quick-detach rings zeroed at 100.
I checked the Henry 45/70 irons at 100 and they're about 2" high at 100yds with the Barnes TSX loads...which should be perfect.
The McWhorter is Zeroed and grouping 1-hole at 100yds. I've checked it out to 750 but I won't stretch it out anywhere near that range.
All the gear from our sponsors came in and its all packed up. Ready to go! I'll check in with you fine folks when there's something to report.

Ya All are killing me. I am going back twice next year july and Oct so I am living vicariously through your adventures so please take lots of pictures shoot allllot and may you all have the best hunts of your life!!!

Well I'm 1 week away. Not thinking about much else
