Hunting reports
Africa

We’re in that last three week push before our next S. Africa hunt and we’re worthless at focusing on anything other than the trip. John Hill and I are taking Justin Holt with us to document the hunt as our photographer. Justin is professional photographer for some of the big names in the US firearms industry so I’m really looking forward to seeing his work. We have 3 rifle companies we’re featuring in this project for the magazine:

CZ550 Safari Magnum .458 Lott- currently at American Hunting Rifles getting cut down and slicked up. We’ll be using the two rifles they sent us on our cape buffalo hunt.

Henry 45-70 Case Colored- Henry sent us a few rifles to brush hunt with. I’m sure we’ll use them for wildebeest, warthogs and impala...maybe a few others. I’m using iron sights with mine and I’m really looking forward to hunting with it. Lever guns with irons are just fun to hunt with.

McWhorter Custom Rifles- We’re hunting in an area I’ve hunted before and the Kudu can really push you into shooting long range. They just disappear into the mountains. I shot my last in this spot at 629yds and the McWhorter is even more accurate than my Jarrett I used on the last hunt. For the record, I understand shooting at such a distance may not appeal to the safari purists but long range shooting is a passion of mine and I practice...a lot.

I’ll make sure to post updates and photos from the field. For now, here’s a photo of the Cape Eland I took on this property during our last hunt there.

Interesting picture!

Out of all your rifles, I think the 45-70, would be my choice except for any Cape buffalo, hippo or elephant.

Have a great hunt!

Have a great time, look forward to your hunt report!

Sounds good.... .just use the Henry 45-70 for the kudu......and use the long range stuff for removing undesirables or targets ........sorry just don't get the point of taking animals at ridiculous long distances .....in mountains etc where it's the only way in some circumstances then yeah I get it ..but ......

I understand your line of thinking, for sure. The long range thing certainly rubs some people the wrong way. To me, it’s just another option in my bag of tricks. I prefer to put in a much closer stalk most of the time.

Good luck on the hunt and the three week wait!

Can’t wait to read your report and see your pictures! Best of luck!

I’d like the McWhorter rifle for an ibex hunt! They make a beautiful rifle.

Best of luck, looking forward to the report and pics!

John Hill, who is going to S. Africa with me in May and then again in June, just took a few ibex in Spain with his McWhorter. 7STW. Incredibly accurate rifle.

Jason, you aren’t the only one who suffers from lack of focus as the departure date draws near! :D I can totally relate.
I’m with the others who favor bigger bores in closer, but I also understand the appeal of long distance shooting. One of the most difficult disciplines to master is resisting the urge to squeeze the trigger when you shouldn’t, which is where many hunters go wrong I think, long range or otherwise. A camera can compound the problem ;) Not my intention to deliver a lecture, just making a couple observations. I’m no stranger to the long distance game, I get it.
Would be very interested to know what cartridge the McWhorter’s are chambered in? And what projectiles you guys will be using?
And also which Outfitter you will be hunting with?
Hope you all have a great trip! And I am looking forward to the pics and hunt report (y)

My McWhorter is a 300 Win Mag. I shoot the 210gr Berger VLD. John’s is a 7STW with the 195 Berger. We’re hunting with Frontier.
I didn’t get the feeling as though you were lecturing. You offered some very solid advice. I’m not one to be quick on the trigger...especially at long range. I learned that lesson the hard way.

You guys are killing me. 111 days here...and I still don't know which rifle I am going to use. :A Banana Sad:

Very easy. Sell all your rifles but 2. One Big Bore and one Medium Bore. Then no decision! Please PM me with rifles for sale and don't tell Cody!
