I know this has probably been posted, but I'm going to resurrect the topic. I've been shooting ramcats broadheads, and I've had great luck with them on whitetail & the aoudad I took with my bow. However, I didn't like how the performed on our trip to Africa, and the last buck I shot (I hit no man's land because he ducked further than I planned for) lived for another year...he's in my profile photo. That spot is where I hit him and got a pass through, and I shot him a little over a year later with my rifle and killed him. PH in RSA suggested G5 Montec, but I shoot deep six arrows and they aren't compatible. The ramcats are almost sort of flimsy, and that's why I'm trying to move away from them.

So I need suggestions for cut on contact or maybe maybe maybe hybrid broadheads for a 45-53# Hoyt Carbon Spyder Turbo with 24.5" draw length, and I'm shooting Easton FMJ 460 spine deep six arrows.

I think the magnus stinger 100 grain 4 blade is hard to be for low poundage and short draw length. My wife has taken kudu, two wildebeest, and zebra all with exit wounds and the zebra was a complete pass through along with numerous smaller animals like impala and warthog! Also magnus has a unconditional warranty no matter how you bend or break them! She has a 25.5 inch draw and is shooting #50 with a older Diamond Razor's Edge.

I haven't looked into it too much but, 1" diameter Slick Tricks in a weight that will work with your spine might work well.

@jeff unfortunately they don't come deep six (micro diameter) threaded. ETA: I stand corrected google searching shows they have made them at some point and they are available. Their actual website is a little unclear.

@Iwannahunt That might be an option. I know lots of people do well with slick tricks, and they do make one option in the deep six thread.

Might be time to change your arrow also. I love the G5’s. I have taken 10 elk with them since I switched from thunderheads. Im not bashing your choice of arrow, but a little heavier arrow with a good broad head would be my choice especially for Africa. I hate being limited on what I can use, this goes for everything. I love the 8mm Rem Mag but I’m limited on options for bullets, so I use a 338 because it gives me all the options I need.
I try to stay in the middle between speed and weight, I love the speed for the longer shots encountered out west but feel I need the extra weight to get the penetration I want on elk.
I have the luxury of shooting a heavier bow also so my advice might not be worth the iPhone it is typed on!
Cheers,
Cody

@Bullthrower338 unfortunately thanks to my shrimp arms and the fact I can’t draw a ton of weight my arrow is already going pretty slow. Weighting it down too much will make it super slow. After I go through the two dozen deep six FMJ’s I have I may switch back to regular diameter. My arrows & ramcats hit deer and the aoudad line a hammer, but they didn’t fair so well on a nyala’s ribs.

I think it’s great that you are out there bunting the hard way! Even more impressed that you are dedicated to finding a better mousetrap to ensure clean kills! Thank you

Rage Hyperdermic+P is made just for lighter poundage bows. I have used them the past two year. Too many shoulder surgeries. Otherwise, I can recommend NAP Hellrazor fixed blade. Hellrazor and G5 Montec at first glance look identical.

Solid broadheads makes a deep six and made in America I think. Two blade with a bleeder razor sharp around 100 bucks for 3 . I like magnus 4 blade blk hornets.

1" Slick Tricks. I shoot a 60lb bow with 26.5" draw and these have been the most accurate and deadly broadheads ever for me all the way up to bull elk. They shoot to the same point of aim/impact as my field points and have low cost, easy to replace blades. I don't see any room for improvement.

I just did a little browsing in the Lancaster Archery site. Your options are limited, but Magnus has the Stinger 4-bladed 100 grain in Deep Six and Slick Trick Magnums (1-1/8") 100 grain are are too. I personally prefer the Slick Trick but both have good records. I own some Solids, which also come in Deep Six, but only because a friend could get them at dealer cost. They're over $100/3 pack normally.

I've played with both Slick Trick and Magnus Stingers and it was my findings that the Slick Trick was stronger but the Magnus penetrated deeper and I believe that it's because the approach angle of the blades on the slick Trick are much steeper.

Maybe. When I did my broadhead testing a few years back I found the Slick Tricks beat out both Legend and DRT broadheads. I honestly didn't expect that. I didn't try Magnus in those tests. I have used the Magnus Stingers, they worked, killing a couple average sized pigs, but I broke a blade off in a feral goat in Texas. That didn't impress me. The Slick Tricks have impressed me for over a decade now as penetrating very well and being extremely strong. So what I can say is they will both work, which is why I mentioned both.

B&A,

You have already received solid advice from Jeff and others.... My advice comes from 2 sources....

1) Personally experimenting with all sorts of arrow/broadhead builds for my wife who shoots 52lbs. With a 27.5" draw length.
2) Witnessing the results of hundreds of bow shots taken on African game with lower poundage set-ups.

My advice is a combination of what Jeff and Bullthrower338 have mentioned in that you need to consider both the broadhead style and your total arrow weight to expect maximum penetration from your lower poundage set-up. Broadhead style is a huge part of this equation. However, your total arrow weight and the percentage of front of center weight your arrow carries are even more prominent factors in achieving the maximum amount of penetration from any lighter set-up.

I realize that you have concerns about arrow speed, but please understand that arrow speed is not nearly as critical as momentum. You might be surprised to learn that an additional 100-150 grains of total arrow weight really doesn't slow the arrow down nearly as much as you would think, but the results equating in penetration are massive! My wife's African arrow build is a total weight of 640 grains with a 200 grain, 2-blade, single bevel Helix broadhead. The arrow has approximately 23% of its weight front of center. I had her previously shooting all sorts of broadhead and arrow combinations, but the common denominator that changed the game was going to a heavier arrow, with a heavier broadhead and an overall heavier foc build. She has now gone from bouncing off shoulder blades to crushing through them.... Less than 10" penetrations to complete pass-thru's on game as large as kudu and zebra.

Regardless of the total arrow weight, with your lower-poundage and draw length, I would personally advise avoiding expandable broadheads all all costs. I don't like their performance on any set-up let alone lower poundage set-ups where you simply cannot generate enough momentum. They act like a huge parachute upon entry... That is if they do not break, bend or deflect beforehand.... Any compact, strong, heavy duty, fixed-blade design that flies true from your set-up should perform well. I like 2-blade, single bevels for lighter poundage bows, but any head designs like Slick Tricks, or Muzzy MX-3s will also perform well. Don't be afraid to beef up your total arrow weight and increase that foc! The results will amaze you...

Limcroma you summed up every point excellently and there is really nothing more to add!! You hit the nail on the head in all respects.

I shoot 50# with my Mathews Triax and a new Vertix. I am a former trad archer and long ago became an advocate of high FOC, a heavy arrow and a single-bevel coc broadhead. One head that has not been mentioned is the KuduPoint, made in Philomath, OR. I have had pass-throughs with it on two bull elk and a big 170” whitetail; friends out here have had similar experiences.
