Rifle barrels that will withstand a barrel burner caliber - 6.5X68S

I'll echo Cody's endorsement of Lilja barrels. Here's a pic of the first five shots out of a .223 I chambered in an 8 twist Lilja, Sendero contour, fluted barrel. This is at 100 yards with 60 grain Vmax bullets.

Impressive grouping...regarding the price on a Lilja barrel in comparison to other barrel brands ???

Premium barrels such as Lilja, Pac-Nor Bartlein, Kreiger, Brux and Broughton are now in the $325 to $400+ range. Fluting can add $100 to $150. My last two rifles wear Mullerworks barrels, a tad cheaper but still accurate shooters.

The prices is really good for quality barrels...if they (company) can short chamber the barrel (0.002") and not cut thread onto the barrel it will be easy to bring it in as a blank...and I believe the barrel will even cheaper ..maybe I need to keep in mind not all the companies will short chamber and profile the barrel and only do a "pre-fit" barrel...but still it is good to discuss this with the companies who I will want to buy a barrel from..(y)

Maybe it is prudent to point out to you members abroad that a barrel here in South Africa will cost between in USA dollar $1000-1200....or between R12000 to R16000
 
Krieger's website has an online ordering feature, so you can go through it and spec it out and see what it will cost. My 404 barrel was $385, as I recall, but it took 8 months to get.

shooting fclass for many years has taught me this.
yo have t0 think of barrels under the same heading as bullets, powder, and cases.
that is disposable items.
once you come to accept this, life is good. some people never do.
using the 6.5/284, and firing strings of 10 - 12 shots quite fast, barrel life was 900 to 1200 rounds.
fire cracking in the throat was quite definite by 200 rounds.
using a 6.5/06 (similar case capacity) for hunting gave a barre life of around 2000 rounds.
hunting never got the barrel as hot as target shooting, thus reducing barrel erosion.
also the 06 case has a longer neck, meaning that the case neck takes more of the flame blasting than does the shorter necked 6.5/284.
switching from 6.5/284 to 284 improved barrel life to 2400 shots on average. same case, bigger bore.
for years we have been fed that the 264 win mag (same as 6.5x68) is a barrel burner, but I personally have never heard that said of the 257 weatherby.
well the weatherby would be even worse.
but roy weatherby always said that if you use the 257 purely for hunting barrels will last a long time.
barrels do not wear out, but erode from flame temperature and sandblasting of burning powder.
pressure equates to temperature, and more powder equates to more time.
do your 6.5x68 and enjoy it.
if it is good for you, you will rebarrel when necessary, and if not you will leave it behind.
but you will know and have fun finding out.

Bruce, I agree, nothing in life last for ever..my view on life exactly. Enjoy what you have , with what you have , remember the good moments in life, do not dwell on the bad ones, but remember how tough it was when they were bad moments , you will then enjoy good moments in life more...

I started this discussion with the view to see if technology in metal /barrel manufacturing has made new technology advances in regards to barrel life of a rifle since I want to build a 6.5x68S rifle that I want to enjoy shooting at anything afar...it will not be my only rifle so I will not shoot it extensively, it`s big brother the 8x68S will be along side it ..I am not concerned about how long the barrel will last while venture onto this journey, I want just to enjoy the journey and make some good memories...:A Banana::A Banana:
 
First I will say if any on the forum wants a Shilen barrel I can offer them at 25% off their list plus $20 shipping in the CONUS. I have not found that any barrel, stainless or CM, land and groove amount or design makes a difference. My luck with Melonite treatment has been great for longevity. Sorry Hogpatrol hasn't had the luck that I've had.

Butch, do you have this barrel blank in stock?
7mm 1/9twist straight taper barrel (billet) 32 inch stainless steel
 
A friend of mine who shoots long distances and prefer building his own rifles to pursue his sport in shooting recommend I need to build a 7mm rifle instead of the 6.5 x 68...

I have no barrels in stock. I have Shilen drop ship them to you. Go to their website and check what they offer. I will order and tell them to ship to you. I do not ask for funds until they are ready to ship.
 
Barrels wear out it is a fact of life the hotter the load the faster they go. So just pick one from any of the reputable names that have been quoted by others EXCEPT SHILEN the last barrel I had from them was a pure POS was supposed to be a primo 1,000yd barrel it surely was not! I sent it back told them to fix or give me another. I got another one. FYI they cut the chamber to my specs and put it on the action so it was all on them no excuses. To their credit after I raised hell the do over shoots sweet. Old shilen good not so much anymore. I would go Krieger or Lilja super good never had a bad one.
 
@Butch Lambert The melonited one I had that went south was a .26 Nosler. Don't have any way of proving it but there may have been an issue with either the barrel metal or melonite job. I have 6.5x47 Lapua melonited with a lot more rounds and it's throat is like granite, zero growth.
 
any barrel is like a lotto ticket.
better brands increase the probability of winning.
