Mannlicher-Schoenauer goes Africa....

I wouldn't be going to Africa soon, but if there's an opening for another MS 1903 6.5x54 made in 1920, I'm sure the little girl would like to go.

Love it, true African style!!

Ray, Has the set trigger been removed or is it an early single trigger only type? My single trigger is more in the center of the trigger guard. I haven't seen another like yours and am curious. Mannlicher-Schoenauer are top shelf classics!

I have to be honest, I think calling the feed system on a Mannlicher a "magazine" has an off-putting sound to it.

I loathe magazines, detachables (detestables?) causing much heartache. The Mannlicher system is truly remarkable and for those that have never owned one...it CANNOT fall out under any circumstances while in the bush. No funny lever that will result it missing in the bush. No jams. No leaf spring to go weak and jam. Just fantastic.

Having now owned a 1903 MS I "get it" and understand why there is a cult following for the 8x68 and the 458 winchester models for dangerous game. They really work. Surely they would be cross prohibitive to make today as the machining steps of the action make a mauser look like child's play in comparison.

The MS is incredibly complicated to fabricate, but do not confuse that with complicated (likely to break/jam) in use. The double trigger systems work better than a typical double trigger mauser too.

Just fantastic rifles and they sell for far less than they should.

I'm restoring a 1903 in 7x57 at present. (AAA original mannlicher stock needs freshening, along with some of the small metal parts...that's it)

Great pics and story HWL! I just had to chime in to show my support for your rifle of choice!

The set trigger was removed by a previous owner. The spring and pins are there so if I could obtain the set trigger it could be easily installed. I was unaware of the MS collectors site- possibly that would have a lead to a replacement set trigger.

Excellent HWL, it is great to see you used your Mannlicher.

Hein Lottering gave me a chance, and I did not hesitate….

...and we count on you and your .458 Win-Mag at our "Mannlicher-Schoenauer goes Africa - hunt" next year...

Mannlicher-Schoenauers in 8x68S, GK or NO, are frequent/cheap to find at the used gun market in Germany or Austria.

But .458 Win-Mag's are rare..... Americans bought them all.

The rest seems to be in the hands of PH's in Africa.

Check the forums at **NOT**PERMITTED**.com for a wealth of information regarding the Mannlicher Schönauer.

They have a Mannlicher specific forum.

Also, check this 'site for parts: http://xn--mannlich-schnauer-b0b.co...f25f-53b4-4f25-bf74-e98325f648c3/Categories/4

This is your original trigger arrangement and the parts list (from the 1939 Stoeger catalog):

I haven't seen many half stock 1903 M/S rifles. The bolt peep sight is an added bonus.

I love the British interpretation of the Schoenauer as much as the Austrian. When done correctly, like this one, it has the lines of a English stalking rifle, and the incredible dependability of the Schoenauer action. Scoping the '03 family is the tricky part because of the split rear receiver. It is easily (if not cheaply) solved on the Continent with claw bases. The British makers usually used a sidemount. Like the American Griffin & Howe version, the British sidemount is extremely dependable, and the lads at Rigby will put a new one a rifle today.

I'll bet that cow was right proud to be shot with such a classic rifle!:A Way To Go:

I shot this cow with a 9.3x62 MS.

Great picture...!!!

Hope to see you and your rifle at our next "Mannlicher-Schoenauer goes Africa" meeting in RSA.

They are a very helpful group. That is where I got my loading information for my 9x56. I highly recommend that anyone who owns an original Mannlicher Schoenauer join this group

The first opportunity I get to go hunting after the lock down , it will be to take my .458 Mannlicher Schoenauer on a hunt...(y)(y)(y)
