So, I Was In The Loading Room Today...

Apologies on my absence today gents. Would have much rather been there!

Soooooo my 9.3 rimmed dies, 286 gr Barnes TSX’s, and the factory crimp die showed up. I ordered the big benchtop RCBS primer tool, some more 270 TTXS’s, and a few other things. Plan on getting the Hornady powder gizmo next. Now to just get the f’n shop finished so maybe I can get my reloading room put together one of these years.

Ahhh, another question for those in the know. I collect WWI and WWII rifles. I have a 1915 Lebel in 8x50 Lebel. My problem is the 8MM Lebel is designed to shoot a .327 bullet. All I can find is the .323’s designed for 8mm Mauser. Can a fella shoot the 323’s in it? I have some factory S&B Lebel so I will have plenty of brass but.... the bullet dilemma has me perplexed

You will have a hard time filling the bore with the .323’s. God knows you aren’t hurting in the hunting rifle category, so why not shoot cast boolits in it? Cheap to shoot, accurate and a hell of a lot of fun because you can shoot those odd balls more often! Let me know if it interests you and I will send you the contact to my boolit guy in MT. He will cast whatever you need. Just got a bunch of 600 grain .505 gas checked boolits from him.

Will probably have a tough time getting meaningful neck tension on bullets that are 4 thou undersized?

Yes! Would love their info!

So, I needed a little therapy after work today...and my therapy cat was at the vet for a tune-up...so I decided to get some loading room therapy. ;)

I have a batch of older WW 45-70 cases that have been loaded enough times that I am now going to relegate them to trapdoor-level loads.

I wanted to load some 350gr Berry's plated with 30 grains of SR4759.

Looking at the powder inventory, I saw I had a brand new 8 pound jug, and an old metal 8 oz can with about 4 oz in it.

The can is from 1995!

So, I decided to load some up with new stuff, and some with old stuff. I will chronograph the loads to see what sort of variation I might get from two different lots, separated by 24 years!

So here is a contest...I will chronograph 5 rounds each from the new and old lots.

Members guess how much difference there will be in the average velocity between the two lots. PM your answer to me...don't post it here or people will be able to bracket themselves to increase their chances.

Winner will get bragging rights as the official AH Velocity Savant. And a genuine green onyx carved Rhino from South Africa.

I will announce the winner after I manage to get out to the range (but not before 4/1). In the event of a tie, I will have my wife randomly select a winner (somehow).

Start guessing....but only one guess per member and be sure to PM it to me!

Tim

Ok folks, we have an answer and a winner.

The delta on velocity was......old powder was 131 fps higher!

Old powder = less moisture = more bang stuff per grain of charge weight.

Our winner is @Rolf_T

Send me your address and I will send you your Rhino!

Thanks for playing!

FYI - the average guess was a delta of 34 fps!

Great....

Now Tim is gonna say he has scientific proof that old farts give more bang for the buck.

In all seriousness, were you surprised the old stuff was that much hotter?

I had the old stuff being hotter but I was right around the average as o recall.

Yes, I was surprised it was that much different. I was thinking 50 fps max

I was also surprised to find out that Rolf_T is in Norway! I wonder what the postal fee is going to be to get the Rhino to Norway! :)

Well? We are waiting for pics.

Let's see that shop, and let's see those first rounds!

Unfortunately I still haven’t had time to unpack all of that and set it up I did however get in my 577-450 Martini Henry dies and some 24 ga brass to form the cases out of.
