Does anyone know anything about the new Nikon Monarch 3&5 scopes??? I'm usually a leupold guy but I just got the new Nachez catalog yesterday and the the Nikon Monarchs are going dirt cheap. Are they any good?

Glass is good, but not Swarovski quality to be certain. I have a number of the Nikon Monarch 3's, including on my heavy recoiling rifles. They're durability is what attracts me to them. I have yet to break one with lots of rounds shot using them in load development.

Will you be able to pick out critters in dark places with edge of darkness light like you could with more expensive scopes? No, but then again how often is that required? In my opinion far less than the rate I've seen scopes fail after long travel and being bumped around in a truck.

The one thing I don't like about them is the shrinking eye relief as you zoom up.

Nothing wrong with a monarch. Have had them on 300WM's and 06's, and still have one on a 450 marlin guide gun. Solid scopes that are decent all the way around, but as Phil said above, you're not in the same ballpark as some of the premium models...but you don't always need to be.

That was kind of my thought. I was going to put a "cheap" vx-freedom on my .45-70 (the one in my avatar picture) but I can get the monarch 3 with a German #4 for about the same money. I just use it for black bear at close range over bait and hogs so I don't need top of the line optics for it. I also just picked up a second .300 win mag so if the monarchs are good I might put one on my older Remington 783 .300 win mag and put the vx-3i on the savage I just bought.

Exactly the model on my Marlin 1895M. Has worked great for me so far.

I have a few Monarchs (one with ED glass) mounted on different calibers and find them reliable,
