Hello all!
I have 3 antelope preference points for WY and I’m thinking about putting in for the draw and hunting this year. I’m having a hard time figuring out a unit to pursue, and also whether I should try and draw a second choice easier unit with little public and save my points.

My 9yo son and I would be traveling from Montana and looking for nothing more than a good hunt and a good time, not after big bucks and not trying to steal anyone’s honeyhole, just hoping someone might point me in a good direction of a unit that has enough public to give it a whirl and enough antelope to entertain us while doing it IR if anyone here has a connection/recommendation of good property with a reasonable trespass fee.

Thanks in advance for any help and feel free to pm instead of posting publicly if you would prefer.

Good luck. I had 5 points and still did not get drawn. You are too late to put in for this year anyway. This would be for pronghorns in Wy. There may be some tags left over in certain areas that are mostly private property.

You might want to see if you can get some leftover doe tags and use this as an armed recon trip for when you get your buck tag. It would probably be easier/cheaper to get access to private property too and at least gives you a connection. Most importantly gives you and your son an excuse for a road trip to Wyoming.

Non-residents Have until May 31 to apply for Antelope.

Non-residents still have a couple months to apply. I know that I can only draw a mostly private unit, but as another member said I may be better off putting in for doe tags and continue to build points.

Definitely something to look in to. Thanks!

My suggestion would be to put in for a tough to draw area for your first choice and then maybe areas 22 or 23 for your second choice. There is a lot of good antelope hunting there, most of the hunting is on private property but access isn't all that hard to come by with a little effort. That way you get to hunt and save your points for next time.

Application period ends May 31 at midnight-Apply for the "Special" permits and you will increase your odds a bit. Otherwise, its worth the wait and definitely worth putting in for "just in case"

Have you looked at the Wyoming hunt planner and checked out units that you might be interested in. It will show the amount of points that were required last year to draw a tag for each unit.

3 points should get you into quite a few good units with a reasonable amount of public land.

I have been playing with that and gaining some information. Thanks!

I would use the info on the web (WYF&G, BLM, USFS, etc.) to find units that 1) you can draw with your points...then 2) check for amount of public land. Generally look for BLM (yellow) with not many topography lines (flat)...if it is a good percentage of this, you will be able to get in there and find them.

Because WY is a "pay to play" state, you can bypass some by getting the special license for an extra fee amd draw with fewer points.

They are a hoot to hunt and great to bring a kid along...high success and WY has a high density...I have had hunts where there was no point in the entire hunt where at least some antelope were not visible somewhere in the expanse of the distance. I have drawn some nice lope tags in NV and UT, but I have had the most fun on hunts for representative bucks in WY.

Best of luck!

@gillettehunter lives in Wyoming, hopefully he can give you some help.

I drew a tag in Unit 83 outside of Thermopolis a few years ago. Lots of public land and lots of antelope. I tagged out on the first day and passed on several good bucks.
You need to get the map that shows the public land in each unit, its worth its weight in gold.

To the OP. I am sorry for the misinformation as to the closing draw date. It was March 15th or so when I was getting drawn every couple of years and since I have not been drawn in a number of years I thought it still was. I was wrong. May 31 is correct.

Looking at draw odds in a MRS (Members Research Section) it showed that it took 5 points to draw 72 for a 100% draw odds in 2018. Random draw odds were only 7%

Looking at the MRS there are a few good units that you can draw with only 3 points but only a couple are 100% with 3. Then you also have to deal with more private land than public.

Are you looking at a trophy type hunt or just a antelope hunt? There is a big difference in points required along with the amount of public/private.

No, not looking for anything big. A respresentive buck and a good time with my son would suite me just fine, the latter being more important than the former.

Mr_Fin, If you want to you can send me a email address in a PM and the I can send you the two pages of data that you can look at.

This data breaks down a number of units as far as trophy status from exultant to moderate. It also gives the amount of public, points required, and chances to draw with those points.
