Hmmm...guess I have to buy a new suitcase since I have always carried a small round duffle bag. Bummer...another expense!
Thanks for the update!

My 2¢, Should have done this a long time ago. They jam up the conveyors to the carousels and people pack things that will break in them, then make a claim which in turn drives up the cost of flying. I wish all airlines would do this. YMMV.

So now the airport can toss your luggage from a farther distance. Records are going to be broken in the annual luggage toss for distance contest. Thanks for the info.

You mean like this?

So I am wondering, a roller duffel bag does have one flat surface........the bottom of the bag with wheels. If you get the bag wrapped with the plastic wrap, thus eliminating "long straps," will the bag be allowed?

I sent an email to the Cape Town based travel agent that I use to see what her take on the new rule is.

1. Only regular-shaped bags will be allowed at check-in counters;

2. This means that the bags must have at least one flat surface to be accepted on the check-in system;

3. Round or irregular-shaped bags will not be allowed at check-in counters; and

4. Bags with longs straps will not be allowed at check-in counters.

NEW RULES AT O. R. TAMBO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT FOR BAGS OF IRREGULAR SHAPE

KEMPTON PARK, 25 March 2019 – New rules for checking in bags of irregular shape and size will be applied at O. R. Tambo International Airport from today (25 March 2019).

The new rules are aimed at preventing blockages and breakdowns in the baggage handling system caused by bags that do not have any flat surfaces or that have long straps or grips as per the International Air Transport Association (IATA) guidelines.

Bags that are round or do not have a flat surface of any kind are the largest source of jams in the baggage handling system. These jams can shut down sections of the baggage handling system, delay baggage delivery to aircraft and inconvenience passengers and airlines.

Airport management has been contemplating these new rules since early 2018 and has now decided to adopt baggage conditions similar to those applied at other international airports. Terminal 1 at Dubai International Airport recently instituted the same kind of baggage rules that will now be applied at O. R. Tambo International Airport.

The new rules have been agreed to after extensive consultations with the Airline Operators Committee (AOC) and other bodies representing airlines.

The new baggage rules are:
1. Only regular-shaped bags will be allowed at check-in counters;
2. This means that the bags must have at least one flat surface to be accepted on the check-in system; 3. Round or irregular-shaped bags will not be allowed at check-in counters; and
4. Bags with longs straps will not be allowed at check-in counters.

Passengers trying to check in bags that do not conform to these rules will be offered the option of having their baggage wrapped with one flat side at airport approved baggage wrapping stations.

“We very much appreciate that these new baggage rules will potentially create inconvenience or additional cost for some passengers, so this is not a step we have taken lightly,” says Kris Reddy,Assistant General Manager: Operations Services.

“However, a small proportion of irregular bags that cause breakdowns in the baggage handling system creates far greater inconvenience for the majority of passengers. We have investigated this matter over about a year and considered a variety of alternatives.

“It is our view, and airlines and other stakeholders now agree, that changing rules for irregular bagswill improve the overall level of service to all passengers,” he says.

Many of the long straps can be taken off and stored in the bag.

You can dick around, cheap out and wonder all you want. Don't buy or use the proper bags and just take the chance they won't be accepted. Then what are you going to do?

Thankfully, my duffel bag has a flat side for back packing.

or we can all switch over.

At least you will notice them when they hit the baggage claim area. You won't even need those lime green or hot pint luggage tags.

There goes Sci’s blue bag program. Although I did read they can wrap them at an approved airport station

This will be tough on lots of people that fly with big duffels. The really nice ones have rollers and a flat side so they should qualify. Of course the rollers may be a problem on the conveyors what ever it takes to help the bags arrive on time.
I have decided to use cheap hard side luggage usually from Walmart. (Coleman brand at the moment) The airlines are just too hard on them to ever have nice bags.
Thanks
Philip

Exact same I use for checked bags. I think I paid thirty bucks for the maximum size. If they get lost, I'm not going to be out megabucks for designer/lifetime/bulletproof luggage. YMMV

What’s the best route to Namibia without going through OR Tambo? RSA doesn’t seem to like the date on my 4457 or my luggage.

See if Air Namibia still has straight flights from Frankfurt. I have gone to Namibia twice in the past via Frankfurt.

We also flew Air Namibia Through Frankfurt. Air Qatar also has a nonstop through Doha. Coming from US it originated from O’hare.

I leave in about 60 days. So as I read this the hard bottom soft sided duffle roller bag i used last year may not be allowed? Am i reading this correctly?
Guess I will go to Walmart and get some hard sided bags.
