New Zealand to Ban Certain Rifles

When they banned handguns in the UK a friend of mine waited till the last day allowed to hand his in. When he went into the police station in central London he said to the policeman... ok just so I feel a bit better tell me all this will make a difference .....policeman replied saying sorry sir but it won't make the slightest difference .. ....

Populists and poulistic accords with little meaning always go down well with the electorate.
Now I read in the newspaper that NZ Premier calls on gun owners to report their guns to the police also.
Can a hunter, or marksman from NZ please tell me, if you can buy guns in quantities there ?
Can I buy guns in NZ like sugar and also military weapons (assault guns) ?

Europeans and their territories were governed by autocratic governments for centuries, so they they have become assimilated to the rule of government and its confiscation of property, for the “ good” of the populous. What NZ just announced is no different. The only redeeming factor for the USA gun owner is the second ammendment, but it to is under interpretation and “review” by the political party that knows what is best for us. It is only time before we also will be affected by the “correct” way to interpret the second amendment by the SCOTUS, all along party lines.

The topic of armament doesn't express us in Europe as much as it does you and yet there were permanent upheavals and revulotions in our history . Look at France at the moment.

As in all of these tragic incidents.....it’s not the gun but the user who is at fault and has committed the crime. Furthermore, it is not the other owners of the same type gun who have committed a crime.
Governments can not legislate sanity! Nor can governments outlaw EVIL.

As someone pointed out I guess the NZ Prime Minister feels good now for having banned something.

Think about Terry McVay who killed so many in Oklahoma City with fertilizer, diesel fuel and a truck. Trucks weren’t banned, desiel fuel is still sold and sure enough fertilizer is still available. Why because banning those items would have been silly as the items did not cause the crime.
If some evil person or persons wants to kill people.....a way will be found.
Frankly that evil man in NZ didn’t need a semi automatic to do what he did.....one could cause just as much carnage with two revolvers and a sawed off shotgun loaded with buckshot. Or as pointed out he could have waited until prayers were over and mowed the people down out front with a big truck.

First, semiautos........then handguns......then lever actions......then bolt actions (because they are 'sniper rifles, don't yah know)......then.......??????? (in case you haven't figured it out yet, it's slavery). The purpose of the second amendment has nothing to do with "hunting", but everything to do with over throwing a tyrannical government, if necessary. Listening to some of the dullards campaigning in the executive branch, we're not that far away from it........:(

So they banned assault weapons...Idiots who just cater to the popular public outrage. This will solve nothing.

I would say taking AK’s/AR’s out of the hunting list would be a great improvement in the world of hunting. I lived in Cody WY and a wealth person in the area used an AR to wipe out a small herd of elk because they were eating his hay.
Another one used his helicopter to push a herd bull and cows toward his son so he could shoot it. The helicopter was convicted and sold in a silent auction. His wife bought it back!
How says money can’t take care of things.
Today it gets your kids into great colleges, keeps you out of jail when you get caught with hookers, etc.
So you want to take away my right to use AR's/AK's to hunt with because of what some idiot did in Cody, WY?! What a ridiculous way of thinking.. In TX we use AR style rifles almost exclusively for wild hog eradication, so I get really perturbed when someone starts the ludicrous "You can't hunt with a (fill in the blank), they're only used for killing people.." argument..

Sorry I have been disappointed with the idea of hunting with an A? and a clip attached in case of a second/more shots needed to finish off the animal.
I hunt with a bow or a single shot Ruger. Still don’t understand why we need the banned gun to hunt. Check out my avatar I did ok in NZ with an old fashion 7mm mag.
Ok I don't really care much about semiauto 'hunting' rifles, but that is one nice stag!

Benjamin Franklin once said: "Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety."

Never let a crisis go to waste...knee jerk reactions are only used to take away the freedoms of law abiding citizens so that the ruling class has more control.

Respect,I am surprised how fast a parliament can work. When I think about on the lame ducks in our government........
Basically, the issue of "American and European" is a matter of opposing views, to put it roughly.
The car/weapons comparison is unreal, everyone knows what this question is about.
Of course, the logic is absurd:.
"Forbid weapons (or drugs for example), then nobody takes them and the world is healed".

But to make the possession of dangerous objects very difficult, sometimes to forbid it, is completely okay.
There are enough crazy ones and they become more every day.
An American weapon friend wants to protect himself from the crazy (understandable), the Europeans (so I call them times) want that a crazy one does not come at all to a weapon.

Let's enjoy hunting and shooting as long as we can.

The level of personal freedom in Germany, the EU, Asia and for that matter the rest of the world does not equal the level of personal freedom we enjoy in the states. We have a Constitution and Bill of Rights that enumerates and AFFIRMS those rights, it does not grant these rights. Thus most of us, not all, get our back up pretty rapidly when some folks feel its OK to forbid the ownership and use of tools, which is all guns are, tools. "Dangerous objects" you say". Tell me what tools cant be used as a weapon. Anything can be misused, guns, knives, hammers, ice picks, meat thermometer's, (Blacklist), tire irons, the list goes on forever. Don't be so much in a hurry to give up what little freedom you have in some false notion that you will be safer because of it. You wont, its a lie, and one perpetuated by the lunatic left every day. I am always very disappointed when gun owners wherever they may be are OK with banning somebody else's guns, because THEY don't personally own "one of those" for their own personal hunting. Ridiculous and shortsighted position to take. Lest some forget, the biggest mass murder in recent American history involved airplanes. Did anyone try to ban them?

Saw this coming, the same is happening right now across Europe, as the EU is issuing directives to restrict ownership of large capacity magazines and "military" semi autos.

Amen

They sure as hell would have if the majority did not use the tool daily.
The use of those tools is now restricted beyond anything people would have ever imagined and everyone accepts it for their "safety".

We are a minority.

A scary thought from my chair:
Your right to bear arms is supported by an "amendment".
All it will take is another amendment and poof that "right" will be gone!
You guys are fighting to keep your firearms every day of the week in the USA. Which is why you guys get your backs up so quickly.

My best, also we Germans have a constitution with state-guaranteed basic rights, although less are than in the USA ?
Do you seriously believe that a Frenchman or a Swede has less rights in his country than you have in yours?
You would have to prove this before you claim it (so I can belive it).

It is idle to compare a deadly hammer with a rapid fire rifle.
It is about the radius of action of the deadly effect to mass murder. You all know what you're getting at.
Airplanes were not forbidden of course, but the controls it to climb have been tightened on the whole world enormously.
Especially in the USA.
Only Angela Merkel, free as she is, let her a lot more criminal into our land o_O

There is a poem which many will be familiar with, even if they don't know who wrote it. At the risk of boring you, I will repeat it here:

First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a socialist.
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

With apologies to the now departed author, German pastor Martin Niemoeller, I think if you substituted various types of firearms, starting with "military style assault rifles" and moving on through the chain to semi-autos, pistols, revolvers, bolt actions, high capacity magazines, low capacity magazines, and double guns, you would find that when they come for your old single shot, there will be no one left to speak for you.

Absolutely! Such an amendment would take a huge amount of doing to make happen though. The current method is inch by inch and its working. In the long run, I don't see such a move happening in my lifetime, being 65 now, but incrementally it is happening if slowly. Difference here is at some point, if it goes too far, there will be a big backlash and I suspect very little compliance if someone were to by edict, recall all semi auto guns.

This gripping poem ( of the submarine-commander in the 1st World War) and later Pastor Niemöller is well known to me.
A miracle that he survived the concentration camp.

But if crazy or overly dangerous stuff is to be controlled, then I am definitely for it and see no totalitarian desire of the state to forbid some things.
If I'm not a soldier, I don't need a assault rifle.
If I'm not a doctor or a pain patient, I don't need morphine in my bedside-table.
Just my 2cents
Sorry for highjacking this thread.
