New Boeing crashes traveling from Addis Ababa to Nairobi

So sad to hear. At many East African crash sites, the bodies are stripped and the site looted. I hope these victims were afforded proper dignity............FWB

I read about, tragic and sad news. I also heard on the news that a country (I don't remember which) was grounding those new 737s. I hope we didn't have anyone from here on board.

The list is growing. The UK just joined the list.

China and Indonesia along with Ethiopia has grounded them. I saw on tv, two brothers from the U.S. on vacation were among the victims.

Very sad whenever this happens anywhere in the world!

@PARA45 The first country reported to ground the planes was China

The list is getting longer. From what I'm reading, they are also banned from the countries airspace. I bet there are some people working 24/7 to figure out what happened. The stock is taking a hit.

U.K., Malaysia, Norwegian Air, Iceland, France, Ireland become latest to bar Boeing’s 737 Max 8, join Australia and Singapore

Now banned from the entire EU.

I heard it may have been poor pilot training.

So there have been problems with the plane pushing the nose down due to faulty stall warning. In the manual is instructions on how to switch to manual override, but I don’t think the pilots were instructed beforehand on the new procedure. “You can fly 737, oh this is the same.” Problem is, this plane crashed 6-8 minutes from takeoff. If, and I mean, IF, that was the problem, having to consult a manual, with no prior training, life and death panic at the same time.

This was confirmed as to what happened on a previous 737 super max crash months ago. Details have not been confirmed on this one.

I heard it may have been poor pilot training.

It's happened to others but IIRC, the pilots disengaged the auto pilot and flew the aircraft manually.

Southwest has canceled my wife’s flight from Phoenix to Denver tomorrow and nothing is available until Friday??? We have snow coming but I wonder if the 737 problem has something to do with it?

Weather related, over 900 flights cancelled. "Time to spare? Take to the air". :D

Initially thinking this might be a typical mass hysteria reaction. But, ....

Global rescue just posted this backgrounder on the topic.

Boeing's Anti Stall System.

....... In the case of Flight JT 610, the preliminary investigation suggests that this system activated after faulty sensors indicated incorrect data about the plane’s ascent. In the wake of the crash, a memo from Boeing indicated that the system may kick in even if pilots are flying manually and it can push the nose of the plane downward such that pilots cannot steer it back up. Pilots were not briefed on the anti-stalling system and it was not included in flight manuals, reportedly because Boeing did not envision a scenario in which the automatic system would take over and because the company wanted to minimize the costs of retraining pilots on the new system. . ...................

It engages even in Manual mode? o_O
A system that the Pilot in Command can not override?!:eek:

Don't know the system but I wonder if the option of pulling the circuit breaker would defeat the anti-stall.

That's an old school solution.

I don't think the pilots have that much time to spare.

If there's no override to that system, any aircraft with it should be grounded and if found to be at fault, the engineers who designed it should be charged with manslaughter.

What I find interesting is it sounds like there is a problem getting the black box back. Maybe some countrys are not safe to fly into or out of.
