I have a 24 Hr day to kill in Joburg before my outfitter picks me up, any ideas on what to do?
Thanks in advance

I would stay in the hotel and read a good Africa hunting book.

My vote also goes to Safari and Outdoor in Pretoria! Could spend the entire day there. Nelson Mandela square is nice to have coffee and browse around a bit.

I would recommend that you get a hotel at the Airport (City Lodge or Intercontinental).

You can get a driver to take you to Union House in Pretoria. While there, you can drive by what has to be the largest university UNISA for degrees by distance learning. One has to wonder why they need so many buildings.

You can take the train right from the airport into Sandton or Rosebank for window shopping and some food.

Other than that, not much to do there.

If you enjoy history, you should go to the Vortrekker Monument in Pretoria. It may mean more to you if you read a little bit about the great treks first. Also the battle of Blood River.

Here's a guy you recognize Jeff.

Who are you hunting with on this trip?

1. Safari and Outdoor
2. Museum of Natural History ( many world record trophies including a 72 inch Kudu)
3. Cambanos and Sons ( Curois and gifts)
4. Voortrekker monument

Many more options like Hartebeest Poort dam and the Pretoria Zoo, but list is in order of priority.
While at Safari and Outdoor Pretoria pop into the butchery that is a few stores down and buy some of the best beef biltong you can get.

I appreciate the ideas! Would like to see the Voortrekker museum.

Voortrekker museum is good
Union buildings are ok but you cant fo inside
Apartheid museum next to gold reef city pretty good and gold mine museum there too
Tons of really great restaurants for arguably the best and cheapest steak in the world
Plenty things to do. Get a good guide and be awake

Lots of good ideas but be cautious it is a big and dangerous city. Shame your outfitter couldn’t accommodate your flight schedule.

It has nothing to do with my outfitter, it's my choice to arrive a day early.

Ok I know some folks that do that to get over jet lag. I just like to get where I’m going and hunt!
Best of luck,
Philip

I've booked 19 hunts in SA and Namibia and have spent almost all of my time hunting, other than three days sight seeing out of months of hunting I thought I would look around for a day near Joburg. In the future I'm going to spend more time sight seeing., maybe split my time in Africa between hunting and sight seeing.

I have always enjoyed seeing more of the countryside and people. Good plan.

19 African Hunts WOW!!!! Why don't you reach out to some of the "Local" members and arrange an AH get together. One of them may be able to show you around.

I would be interested in it if you pass. Please send me the info on the gun shop if you do not buy it. I have the needed ammo and brass.
Thanks,
