Runner strangles cougar

Whenever I go out for a run with my wife and son, I take my NAA .22 Mag along. It is small, light weight, and the holster clip keeps it in place without bothering me at all. I'd much rather go into "hand-to-hand" combat with a stray dog (cougar?), with the possibility of using this small .22 should even the smallest or unlikely opportunity present itself, than hoping to find a stick or rock to defend myself or wife and child with.

This mishap simply reinforces my view to be as prepared for that unlikely event as best as one could - wheater that being out running on the streets of your neighbourhood or out in the wilderness on a trail run.

Will it kill a mature Cougar at close range? No idea. But it will at least kill a attacking dog should you manage to shoot it in the head.

I don't believe we are getting the whole story behind this incident.
Being that young of a kitten he would still have been ttogether. If mother were alive the guy won't have been looking like he did and I would consider him to be lucky if still alive.
Seems more probable that the mother was dead and the 20lb kitten wondered onto the path. Here comes a jogger and for whatever reason picks up the kitten at which point he gets some claws to the face.
Just my opinion, could have went down the way it's reported but I guess he would have some answering to do if it turned out any other way.

If I run around with a handgun around here I will have a quick trip to the jail house.

I .......Here comes a jogger and for whatever reason picks up the kitten at which point he gets some claws to the face.
.................

So you figure he was out searching for his wife house cat and just got confused and picked up the wrong animal.

Oh look a furry little cute fluff ball...
I've seen this same scenario with a black bear cub and read several story's of this interaction. End results vary greatly obviously.

I know the county Ranger that patrols the attack area. He said the mother and her young were known to be in the vicinity for a while. The mother was likely out hunting elsewhere and away from her young when the attack occurred.

We have had several mountain lion attacks in Northern Colorado over the last 20 years. I know of a 17 year-old high school wrestler that was ambushed and killed while jogging as well as a 9 year-old and a 4 year-old that were hiking with parents when killed. Can’t let small children get ahead of you on the hiking trail!

We have lots of lions here. My houndsman has taken 5 so far this winter and we have only hunted 1/3 of our area. My area extends from the WY boundary down to almost Boulder, CO. Let me know if anyone is interested via a PM.
