Montana Rifle Co. 458 Lott Stainless Rifle

As a suggestion, when I was preparing for a Buff hnt I wanted to shoot my 375 a lot to get used to the gun, caliber, recoil etc.
I "down loaded" 200 rounds of 375 ammo- made basically a low recoil load fr practice. When ready for the hunt simply move to factory Norma ammo and transition was in-significant!

I have attended many big bore shoots including the world championships and guess what- they are all shooting less recoil loads- practice makes perfect- only change at hunting is scope sight!

On another note, if I buy a new MRC rifle from a dealer on Gunbroker that was made before you took over, is the warranty still good?

Looks nice! Is this a newer rifle, from the current owners?
No sir, it’s 2 years old. Our next order to MRC is going to include an ALR in 275 R for me though!

My next new rifle will be a stainless MRC.
Most like a 416 Rem. The only alterations, for myself, that I would consider would be possibly different sights, shorten the barrel to 22", a sling stud barrel band (if it does not have one). I see this as more economical than converting a 375 H&H M70 Classic stainless and adding an aftermarket stock.

Isn't it a shame that Winchester won't come out with an M70 "Guide Gun"?

My Lott is 11 pounds empty and is not scoped.
Plus, I load it down to .450 NE Flanged ballistics (whata sissy) = 480 grain or 500 grain bullets at just a whisker over 2,100 fps, from 23” barrel (a Gunsmith built it on a CZ 550 magnum action, express sights, larger bolt handle welded on, Model 70 safety, Mauser style trigger, etc., etc.)
However, I do agree with those who see the wisdom in carrying a light weight rifle in the heat of Africa.
I’m told that elephant hunting is potentially many long miles of marching through the bush.
I’ve not had the privilege.
But buffalo (and even so called “plains game”) in my experience can sometimes be also quite a long trek.
I’m still young enough (only 66 now hahahahaha) that, I can yet carry an 11 pound rifle all day.
But, it’ll be soon that such weight will be more than I will want to tolerate.

Well I guess I fibbed. I did buy a pre-owned M70 Classic Stainless re-barrel to 416 Remington. H-S Precision stock, 22" barrel, I like this rifle. But, grab my 20" 416 Ruger when doing my moose hunting.

But,
I did buy a used MRC V2 in 458 Lott. I have not fired it yet. I need a LOP reduction and thinking of cutting barrel to 22". Also thinking of adding barrel band sling stud and possibly different rear sight.
I actually like the feel of this rifle as is with 24" barrel, though LOP needs reduction.
Per my scales, it weighs 8 pounds 3.1 ounces.

Don’t cut the barrel! Sell it to Toby!

Lol, I think this will be a keeper. This stainless one is more suitable for my use than the CZ that I have. I am more of a confirmed 375 and 416 user but this rifle shall see use.

just a few thoughts:

1/ if you want to walk after elephant in africa, you dont need to carry anything. No gun is the lightest. However, If you want to hunt in africa then your purpose is to shoot. The carrying is the price you pay for the purpose-hunting.
2/If you hunt ethically then you need to be able to reasonably put the animal down- that means accuracy and appropriate gun and bullet.
3/ Accuracy means practice AND also good technique. Flinching is not good technique. So IF you can shoot a light rifle well then go for it.
4/ Honestly, I believe that everyone has to learn to cope with recoil. some do it better but all of us will shoot a pcp airgun more accurately than a 458 Lott. Just simple physics and psychology.

So I think that you should not carry a rifle that you cannot shoot often and accurately. If your thoughts are that shooting is just a milisecond while walking carying a rifle is days and days, then you are barking up the wrong tree. That millisecond can cost you upwards of $100 000 if you stuff it up.If you close your eyes and jerk the trigger,is that 2lbs worth it ? I realised long ago that it is easier for me to learn to carry a 10 lb rifle all day than try to cope with a flinch. I think we owe it to our chosen game animal to put it down quickly and humanely -what is a little suffering with 10 lbs of rifle over your shoulder if it makes you a better shot.

It is a shame that Winchester won't make an African model with a big bellied magazine and a nice trigger and stock to match. They have the ability to do it. Work with NECG and these CZ folks to shame. Don't half measure it just get it done.

It is also a shame the MRC can't seem to keep its doors open.

I agree with all you said. Especially the M70 trigger and MRC staying in business.
