OK. One more question. On line G5 it asks the reason for bringing in a rifle to SA. Obviously to hunt. But is that all I need to put in or do I need to go into detail? Just wanting to avoid any hangups at the airport.

Put down hunting in RSA

or just for kicks
Zingela

or
Jag

You will receive a confirmation of your upcoming hunt from your outfitter. You will submit this along with other documents with your SAP form. This is a confirmation that you are entering SA with a rifle to hunt.

I entered trophy hunting.

I just filled one out at the Saps office with assistance from riflepermits.com.

Simply wrote in one word. "Hunting"

Less is more when dealing with governments. Keep it simple.

OK. I am getting a little uneasy with my US rep. According to him the 4457 form which I got last December is good. According to what several people here said it has to be dated sometime this year. No problem. I am going by the airport in a couple weeks so I will just get another form. But it concerns me that he does not have up to date info. And now according to Sierraone I need a letter from the outfitter. My rep said only if I was going to hire a go between like riflepermits. Asking for help and info on this. This forum is saving my butt. Thanks in advance.

Speedster, I use Rifle Permits. The letter I receive from my outfitter is for the package I submit to Rifle Permits. It can be used as confirmation that I will be hunting in SA. If you're not using a go between and your outfitter says you don't need one, just go with that.

Suggest you apply for and get your permit OKed in advance with riflepermits or Gracy Travel. If this is your first time and you're trying to save a few bucks by freelancing everything, IMHO, it's false economy.

The 4457 rules for RSA have certainly changed over the past year. It’s best to have a 4457 dated this year with an form expiration date past your hunting date to be safe.

I have only obtained a permit in advance and for that to do need a letter from the outfitter. I don’t know what you need for day of arrival, but I can’t help but think you would need something to explain why you are showing up with a firearm.

The 4457 rule is on the South African side not the US side. The actual 4457 never expires but someone in the SA government who works with rifle permits decided that it needs to be dated the same year that you visit SA.

It is one of the hoops that we need to jump through to get a firearm into THEIR country. If your customs agent here in the US is balking at giving you a new 4457 just tell him that you lost your old one or that your house burned down with it in it. Better yet tell him that you were in a survival situation and it was used to start a fire to save your life.

You need the letter of invitation in all events . Pre approved and if you get it at airport . Your outfitter should know this . Yes 4457 with current years date stamp on. Happy Hunting !

You should be uneasy with him

I literally just did this Monday, in the Saps office in Joburg. My hunt starts in 15 minutes.

You need an invitation letter and a location you will be staying. And you need a 4457 with a signature dated in 2019 AND on the current form which says it expires in August 2019, or mine did. But use one with an expiration date that is after your return. You also need a flight itinerary. Copies of all this to leave with saps.

Contact Henry and pay him the $80 to help in the office or $120 or whater6it is to do ahead of time. Take it out of your agents fee. He owes it to you and can chalk it to education expense;)

Do they keep records of form 4457? How would they know you are getting a duplicate?

Nope no duplicates just the originals.

If you live in a area like I do the local customs agent will know you. We only have two of them and I see one of them quite often at the shooting range.
